Does anyone out there feel a bit pressured and freaked out seeing that stats of people who applied early and already got accepted? I'm still working on my personal statement, and it's taking me forever. I just wanna hurry up and send my applications off!!

I'm trying! It's hard to make time while studying and doing assignments for my other classes. Plus, I'm still job shadowing. I'll send it out in the next 2 weeks i hopee!

I feel A LOT of pressure 🙁. I sent mine in about a week and half ago. of course optomcas hasnt sent it to the schools yet, nor have they calculated my gpa even though they already recieved my transcripts -___-
Since optomcas takes forever and a day to get things out, i'd advise you to send it out ASAP. Have you taken the OAT yet?

You are so right! At least you sent it already! I took my OAT in August. Thankfully, got that out the way, but i'm stressing over my personal statement. It just doesn't sound right. I feel like I need to redo half of it.

Hey at least you got the OAT out the way. I plan on retaking mine in Jan. Took it at the beginning of the month and my scores arent all that competitive =(. Try to have someone read over the essay for you. I had like 4 people read and criticize mine so I had the essay completely done in a little over a week.

im in the same position as you, im re-taking it in jan. and its the worst feeling in the world, i didnt do bad, i got average but i know i can do better cause it wasn't hard at all. its so hard to study while you're in 5 classes.. makes me wish i was one of those ppl posting in the 2016 acceptances! lol 🙂

IF you don't mind me asking, what was your OAT score? Mine was pretty average too TS:330 AA:340, but it was a lot better than I expected! What discourages me is that I don't have much extracurriculars or experience. It seems like everyone here has worked as an optometric tech or something similar.

I wouldnt worry too much about that kind of stuff. It seems to me that if you have solid gpa/OAT, you dont need crazy shadowing hours or work experience in an optometric setting. I think as long as you can get like 20-30 hours in at a few different types of places (ie pp, optical, eye institute, etc) you should be fine. As far as extracurriculars go i'm not sure how much weight is placed in those when schools are considering. I would guess they wouldnt make or break you unless you have like absolutely nothing.

your score is actually above average for most schools. mine was only 310 TS, 300 AA. so i think you are fine and mjl is right, if you have a good gpa and your OAT scores are decent(which they are) they wont make a big deal if you dont have alot of extracurriculars.

I have alot of extracurriculars but it doesn't make a difference cause my OAT scores are low and so is my gpa is average, which is why i need to retake it. 🙁

I have ok EC's and a decent gpa. I just need a better OAT score =(. I wish I had applied back in july when things were a bit less competitive lol. If only I knew then what I know now.
Preparing again is gonna be a challenge since I work fulltime. It's such a pain to work all day then to go home and study. =/

I'm not sure if you are in school currently, but I work 50-60 hour weeks and when I was studying for the oat, the last thing I wanted to do after going to work was sit in front of my Kaplan book for 2 or 3 hours. It was worth it though when I got my 340 averages and a 390 in biology 🙂 stick with it, even of you are retaking it, you know now how to pace yourself and how it is designed. It will be worth it.

50-60 hr weeks?!! wow. now i can't complain about 40hrs. Thanks for the words of encouragement though! 🙂 what other resources did you use besides the kaplan book?

Sometimes a little pressure can be a good thing 🙂, but don't freak out. You still have time!

I would embrace the challenge because I think it will help either prepare you or give you a small glimpse of what Optometry school will be like. You will go to class somewhere between 30-40 hours a week, and you will have to come home and study a lot. While it may be a pain, Optometry school is having a full-time job and then some.
