Greetings all,

I wandered onto SDN-Path today and proceeded to spend the entire 28C Saturday afternoon reading posts and laughing - what a forum! (what a geek!) I particularly liked the Eureka moments thread and the associated clinical medicine stories.

There were too many threads I wanted to post to, so I figured I'd just jump in with a new one to start - sort of a "here I am". I've been away from mailing lists and forums for awhile, and there are a heck lot more candy options than when I did this last, so please ignore things like weird formatting, double-posts or the like.

By way of background:
I'm a 3rd AND final-year (long story, will explain some day) student at UCalgary, Canada - currently finishing week 1 of 3 months of Eternal Med, God help us all.
Path is my hobby - I run a research project in renal/transplantation path on the side, which sounds insane but is rather a retreat from insanity... the one light when all others grow dim... 😎
Residency in Canada is out of the question because I'm not Canadian (heaven knows I would love to stay) so I've started the ERAS process. Currently crash-coursing US geography and making out my List Of Thirty.

Sup man, welcome to the path forums. Glad you could join us. I remember when I first caught sight of this forum, I quickly found myself at home as well when reading the posts. It seemed like many people were thinking similarly to what I was thinking. People here seemed to be less uptight in the pathology forum than other forums. It kinda give you a rough sense of who you'll be working with in the future...and you realize that the future is bright and life is beautiful.

Anyways, off the topic...after tonight, I won't be surprised if the number of people applying to pathology dramatically increases this year and reaches a new high. I spent the last several hours at the bar and ran into random classmates...I talked to two other people who are considering pathology. So now, that makes 8 people, including myself, who are applying to pathology. And the best thing is, they're all cool folks. Again, let me emphasize that the future is bright and life is beautiful.

I thought people in Canada knew more American geography than most Americans? Oh, wait, that's right. You're an American!

Glad to hear you had a nice day reading the forums. I did that last year about this time - although by this year there are a few more pages of posts to go through...but we try to be amusing.

Oh oh...All this talk about pathology increasing in competitiveness/more med students interested must mean we have another new "what about the job situation" thread coming up shortly! I heard there are no jobs! Should I forget about path? To launch a preemptive strike: Fire at will, Mr Data.

Actually it gets more complicated than that - I'm Malaysian. 😛
Got into med school right out of high school back home (Malaysia is part of the Commonwealth, so our medical education somewhat follows the UK system), did 2 1/2 years and wrote my Phase I finals, then flew to Calgary. They are a 3-year programme so I had to start with 1st-year med - if I had gone anywhere else I would have entered 3rd year directly.

As you can see, I'm no stranger to complexity.

And I won't be offended in the least if you whip out your maps. 🙄

I'm also glad to hear you are complex. Complexity is a wonderful trait. Keeps people guessing. It's kind of rare in this country, which is more of a "you're either with us or you're against us," Texas-style kind of place.

Isn't it great? Kentucky is in the northeast! That makes me happy. Now we can make fun of all of the northeastern liberals that live there and make life so unpleasant for people with "real family values."

And now that I am in michigan, officially a part of the midwest, I can make fun of all those losers from Ohio because they are part of the "out of touch with the heartland" northeast!

(I am in an "I hate political parties" mood today, in case you didn't guess. Very tired of hearing about "family values" and "the american people")

anyways, on the serious side, listening to political campaigning is just annoying. politicians pretending to care about the people and trying to sound all compassionate n sh1t.

Can't we have both? I am often happy when I am angry. It is in the expression of the anger, carnal rage, venting if you will, that the true inner demons are released from the shackles of behavioral restraint. Held down by a modicum of restraint, confined by modern society's insistence on polite and respectful behavior, the inner demons sit, the passion bubbling within until an explosion results in their sudden release.

I shouldn't complain that much. Polite and respectful behavior, I think, is an important part of society and decorum should be maintained, at least in the course of normal activities and interactions. The problem exists that so many people have taken it upon themselves, in their selfish and ego-centric worlds that they live in, to figuratively crap on the heads of those who conduct themselves appropriately. And they teach their offspring the same. In layman's terms, "The squeaky wheel gets the grease." Thus I often respond to fire and brimstone-like behavior by ratcheting up my respectfulness and pouring on the decorum. My inner demons are polite, albeit somewhat passive aggressive.

I think bitter Yaah is more interesting, although less fun on my end.

You know, I'm watching part of the "Democratic" "Convention" and people seriously don't know how to read off of teleprompters. Why do they all force it so much? Monotone....Even the freaking actors can't figure it out.

All these celebrities at the "Democratic Convention" are almost enough to make me want to vote Republican. Losers.
