Well I don't see much brotherly/sisterly love from the Canadians....there's a Desi post so why not a Canadian one??
Post your groans and moans about Canadian schools or how much you love Canada....doesn't matter....just wanted to see how many of us there are...and who is planning on crossing the border (and possibly returning back home after) or staying in the the land of colourful money and two official languages.
Welcome! Bienvenue!!!

😍 😛 👍 😍

Sup everyone!

Proud to be Canadian... kinda hard to get into Canadian schools so giving US schools a try... At this rate, will most likely head to the States for my education (might come back if the $$$ is good) ... senioritis killed my chances at U of T for the upcoming cycle so who knows?!

I'm in Toronto... GPA isn't high enough to apply to Canadian schools, so I'm only applying to American ones

Woot Woot!!
I went to UofT...screwed me over...now i'm in the states finishing my undergrad. I have a question regarding some Canadian dent schools...
Both Western and Toronto drop your worst 2 and 1 years respectively, so when they are considering an applicant for an interview do they ONLY look at your best years or do they also take into account your crappy years?? My first two years are not even worth mentioning ...but my last two years I have over a 3.8...and I'm finishing up my fifth year, so it'll increase more (or at least stay constant). I want to get into a Canadian school...but looking at prez-al's stats on predent.com makes me rethink my goals (why didn't Canada give you a chance with those marks??? Did you at least get an interview?? wth....) 😕

i think western's pretty decent, man. my gpa's around a 3.5ish and i got an interview at western. never applied to uoft; dont wanna go there anyway. plus, my gpa is low for uoft. 😛 for western, only avgs count; they wont look at your gpa. just hit an 80% or above and score good on dats, and youll get an interview. for admission, you need around an 83-84% avg over two years.

regarding those dropped years, if you apply with 4 years under you belt, western will drop ONE year (not sure which one), and two years get avged together as one. so, in the end, you have one seperate year, two years avged together into one year; total of 2 years. for uoft, theyll drop your lowest year, as long its not the last one. this is, again, if you apply after youre done wtih 4 years. uoft needs 3 years worth of marks; (western only needs 2). with uoft, im actually not sure about whether they drop your whole year, or one year worth of marks. so, if the second option is used, they would drop 5 credits (or 30 credits for US schools) worth of lowest graded courses.

I did get interviews from both Western and U of T, but somehow they occured in alternate years as I never interviewed both during the same cycle. The DAT scores in my profile are from February as my previous scores were 19/19/18... my GPA in my final year is better than my previous crap year (second year) so this might help me quite a bit if I apply to Toronto this year. To be honest, I interviewed there and wasn't impressed with their facilities (Western is WAY WAY better, just not a fan of their curriculum). Oh and that dreaded mural too... it's quite a hideous sight...

McMaster student here..

i'll be applying in a few years , i'm only going into my 3rd year now, and i am in a 5 year co-op program (biology and pharmacology)

i'm guessing i'll only write the american DAT

Well I haven't seen either of the facilities...but ideally I'd prefer to get into one of the Ontario ones just because it would be easier on my relationship. I've been to the Toronto Dent library...is that building pretty much the dent school?? I was very unimpressed with some stuff I found in the books there....a bunch of the DAT prep books had the answers ripped out of them.. so lame.

What's wrong with Western's curriculum? McGill is the one I'm not too enthused about...almost 2 full years with med students???

these ontario schools are extremely hard to get into as well

The U of T dental library isn't that special. For some reason it's closed on weekends (as I found out after asking during the tour). The dental school at U of T is in a pretty good location in downtown as it is within 5 mins walking distance of Eaton Centre but I just remember the mismatched furniture during my interview and the 1970s style student cafeteria.

Western has a sink or swim curriculum which I don't really like since personally I would want to be eased into a dental program instead of starting off in labs right away. Facilities seem comparable to ones in the states (I'll find out in a couple weeks if this is true or not). Never considered McGill dental... I can't speak french well and I don't like the Habs... and being dominated by med students doesn't seem very appealing to me.

For marks calculation, both U of T and UWO will drop your lowest year if you apply in 4th year or after. The only difference is U of T will drop it even if your other 2 years are not full course loads (usually 5) whereas UWO requires those 2 years be full and at minimum 80% each.

I was VERY surprised by how nice UofT's main clinic is. I remember them saying something about it being brand new. I expected to see a very old and ghetto clinic. I was surprised. We didn't get to see the main clinic at Western so i can't compare. UofT and Western are excellent. Hopefully some of you might be lucky enough to get accepted to either (luck is what I call it cuz so many great applicants don't get in). Whichever one accepts you is the best lol Few people have a choice. Western's main clinic is getting a makeover soon so that should be cool too.

hello canadians...i am a 4th year biochem/chem combined honour student in the unversity of british columbia....

and i am going to apply for the UBC dental school...one of the most expensive dental schools in canada....

anyone know why UBC dental school is soooo freaking expensive???

I would still take the Canadian DAT, since US schools do accept it. Also, if you decide later on to apply to Canadian schools, you have the score available.

The point that I don't get is why the students have to pay clinic fees during the first two years when they don't even use the clinics until third year........

and its way higher tahn all other dental schools in canada...a whopping 23000 canadian dollars.....

would it be a bad idea to take biochem as a summer course? how would schools like u of t, mcgill, or western ontario look at it? i dont want to take pchem and biochem in the same semester next fall. i will take biochem lab next fall and biochem 2 next spring though
thanks

I keep hearing how outrageous UBC's DMD program is, so I just checked it out. It's twice the cost of a DDS from the U of A! (and we're getting a new clinic soon as well -> Edmonton Clinic)

On top of that, UBC requires that you put $9000 down within two weeks to keep your spot, trapping those who are waiting on spots from other institutions. What a pathetic money grab

Who here's from the UofT at sauga campus?! 😀
I miss that place SO MUCH... attend undergrad in california now, trying to decide between SF or LA for Dental school! Both places are due for an earthquake any minute 😛

The cost is averaged out to four years so you won't have as much trouble paying a large sum at once. I paid 8 grand for clinic fees for the hygiene program and I have only worked in the clinic twice this year.

Hey! I'm from McMaster. I'm going into my third year in biochemistry... maybe switching out, still pretty undecided over here...

Probably won't bother applying to Canadian schools. Yay for the US 😀

Lived in the same canadian city my whole life!!

the 200 grand isnt that horrible considering you'll make more than that in your life time. Pay it off in 5 years tops. if u made 38K a year, then yes dont even spend 200 grand on education.
but.... it's dentistry u kno

I just received my acceptance to Alberta. I am pretty excited. Does anyone know when the new building will be completed? The way construction is going in this province, they may have a hard time finishing it on time. I guess I will probably be an Oilers fan by the time the four years are up. Any other accepted U of A students out there?
