I’m a fellow in a small field who is in a malignant program. It didn’t used to be, but we had two faculty members leave unexpectedly, and two are planning to retire. That leaves the department with two overworked faculty members, one of whom has a really difficult personality. There are several attending positions posted, none of which have been filled in two years. Nonetheless, the program is still in the fellowship match and interviewing several applicants.
I have managed to be out of town for every fellowship interview for my own job interviews. I accepted a job in a nearby state. Now that my job search is over, I have been scheduled to interview fellowship applicants. I can’t in good faith recommend this program to applicants as the teaching and fellow support has suffered, and the working environment is unpleasant. I know i should be selling the program to the applicants, but I can’t stomach it. Any advice?
