First off, when does this prog actually start. I know the 16th is the 1st day of classes but when is the orientation.

Second, I chose this program because I had heard it is the best/oldest. But now Im hearing talk that it might not be the best. Any thoughts?

Finally, the actual masters degree we receive. It is an actual Georgetown diploma correct?

thanx 🙂

Orientation is August 12 & 13. The MS degree we receive is indeed from Georgetown since we are technically enrolled at their graduate school of arts and sciences.

1. Yes, the first day of class is on the 16th. Orientation starts at 10am. on the 12th. I think it lasts until the 13th.
2. I think there are a few pretty well established masters programs out there (ie. SMP, Finch's, Drexel IMS, BU), and they all do the job of getting one (provided you work hard) into med school. Although there might not be as large of a proportion of the SMP class being accepted to Georgetown SOM as there might be Finch masters students being accepted into Finch SOM (for example), I think the major positive is that many SMP students are accepted to many other medical schools as well (possible even UC's!). The fact that SMP students are getting into a variety of medical schools across the nation shows the quality of this program.
3. Yes, it is a masters of science of degree in physiology and biophysics from Georgetown University

thanx guys.

Just one more question;

How does Financial Aid work with SMP. I know Gtown itself awards no money...etc. But having filed FAFSA and having yet to receive any mail from Gtown (recently got accepted into the program and was notified by phone), do I have to make a move on my own first?

thanx again. 🙂

Go to this website
http://www.georgetown.edu/students/student-aid/gradsupp.htm

and fill out the form. They should sent you a letter telling you how much stafford loan money you get. Be aware though that you most likely will not even get enough loan money to pay for tuition let alone living expenses.

BTW, how is everyone else paying for this program? I just found out I will only be getting 18k in loans and I'm not sure how to get the rest. Do you guys just get private loans from your bank?

eskoset, the 18k in loans is from the government...8k is subsidized and 10k is a loan that has a lower interest rate than what u can find from private loaners. the rest you have to you get from a private company.

stang...i took out a private loan from citiassist.

You can get private graduate loans from just about anywhere. Here's a list from a nonprofit organization called TERI. They arrange to get students special rates, etc based on your school. I'm not sure if Georgetown is a TERI affiliated school, but it may be worth checking out.

I took out a salliemae signature private loan for 29k at an APR of prime +1.00%, 0% fees, 3% repayment. Not the greatest, but given my average credit and no cosigner its pretty good. This loan is the "Premier loan" on the Georgetown graduate financial aid webpage. Good luck.

I did the private loan thing from citiassist too, it was a lot less complicated then I thought it would be. It seems like the financial aid office has been kind of slow with everything so I would just keep bugging them about the stafford loans and how to set up the private loans.

I went down to DC about a week ago and found a place about three blocks from campus (a basement apartment), but I can't move in until the 13th...so I guess I am going to crash with some friends until then.

Does anyone know how long orientation goes for on the 12th and 13th and what exactly we will be doing? I would kind of like to have an idea of when I can start moving.

I am looking forward to starting the program.

Thanx for the reply guys. Having just submitted the form online, anyone know how long before I hear a response? And can you guys tell me how long before I get a georgetown email? thanx again n I hope to see u guys there. 🙂

oh and one more question. Iv received an acceptance letter by email, not yet by mail. So I was wondering what I should expect by mail. Is there a packet invovled? Also, the deposit thats due, according to the email, is to be send back with some form. Can anyone tell me what this confirmation form is (since I don't have it yet). 🙂
