Hi all,
I was just wondering if one's candidacy for a fellowship is influenced by the residency program chosen. Does it matter if you train at a community hospital, or is it better to do a residency at a University-affiliated program?

Specifically, I interested in Maternal-Fetal Medicine or maybe Reproductive Endocrin/Infertility.

Thanks in advance for the responses (the ObGyn forum is a little slow)

Kind of hard to give an opinion. In general, university programs are more respected, but there are lots of exceptions. In Surgery, Carolinas Med Center in Charlotte, NC is a very strong community program, whereas U. South Florida's Surgery program is fairly weak (strange, given their high-power SurgOnc program). I'd take it in a case by case basis.

Does anyone know of good resources to find out about relative 'prestige' of different programs? I've be to FREIDA, but that only compares programs based on objective measures.

Thanks for the input.

The best sources for relative "prestige" of various programs would be from your own faculty/senior residents. They can give you the scoop on what programs are highly respected in your field of choice.

And as noted above, there are many community programs which are highly respected, more so than many university based ones. Even residents from less respected community programs are successful at getting competitive fellowships. I know residents from the local community program who have matched into Surg Onc, Laparoscopic and Plastics over the last couple of years.

Thanks a lot Kimberli.
