Has anyone had experience with obtaining a fellowship position after spending a few years in private practice without doing research or having contact with an academic ophthalmologist?
I enjoy my subspecialty (peds) but am very interested in obtaining more training and doing peds plus either nonASOPRS plastics, Neuro/plastics or comprehensive (it's been almost a decade since I've been inside the eye so I would need a cataract surgery refresher training should I go that route).
Is a fellowship even an option once you've been in private practice for so long?
Do you have any suggestions for finding nonASOPRS oculoplastics or cataract fellowships?

I would try and pursue private practice fellowships if this is your goal. nonASOPRS fellowships are harder to find because ASOPRS doesn't necessarily like them and I believe (but am not certain) you can be removed from ASOPRS if you're caught providing a nonASOPRS fellowship.

As for cataract fellowships, here you go in no particular order:
Refractive Surgery Alliance (will get a lot of LASIK/corneal refractive experience too) - RSA Fellowship Network
WK Eye Institute - WK Eye Institute - TOP Eye Doctors - TOP Ophthalmologists - TOP Optometrists - Your Eye Specialists in Shreveport Bossier City - Best Eye Care Center - Shreveport - Bossier City Louisiana - A Part of the Willis-Knighton Physician Network (you'll have to get in touch with them directly)
PCVI (cornea, cat, refactive) - LASIK Eugene | Cataract Surgery Cottage Grove - Oakridge | PCVI
The Eye Institute of West Florida - Cataracts Tampa | Cataract Surgery St Petersburg | Eye Institute
JacksonEye - LASIK, Cataract Surgery, Corneal Inlays - Lake Villa - Jacksoneye
Vance Thompson Vision - Vance Thompson Vision | Midwest Vision & Eye Care (likely one of the harder ones to match with but fantastic training in all things ant. seg.)
Wang Vision Institute - Nashville, TN Ophthalmologist | Eye Surgeon Nashville TN | Wang Vision (used to have one, haven't seen any fellows in awhile)
Vold Vision - Fayetteville, AR Ophthalmologist & Optometrist | Vold Vision
Eye Consultants of Atlanta (cornea) - Atlanta Eye Care Center | Eye Consultants Of Atlanta
Minnesota Eye Consultants (glaucoma or cornea) - LASIK Minneapolis | Cataracts Minneapolis | MN Eye

I'm sure there are others but this is a good list. You may be able to find someone to mentor you back into it. I would think some of these fellowships would be hard to keep up with peds thereafter given the expansion of your skillset beyond just adult cataracts. Also, I gave you mostly private practice based fellowships since you mentioned no contact with academics.
