How competitive is it to secure a fellowship in Cardio Anesthesia? I am going to start my CA-1 year in July and would like to know what I can be doing to improve my chances. Region of the county is going to be key as I am living in an area that I am not thrilled about as of now. We all know residency is competitive as hell and so some of us are living in areas that were not even close to our first choice. California or Fl being what I will be shooting for, thus a total of 10 programs. Thanks.

Quite competitive. Do well on ITEs. Get to know the cardiac guys at your place, see if any of them have connections to that area. Maybe present an abstract or two at a nat'l meeting.

I'm sure you'll get responses from people more knowledgeable than I, but one thing to consider if you do your cardiac rotations as a CA2 is get your cardiac rotations scheduled BEFORE December of CA2 year. Many cardiac fellowships will interview you for fellowships in Feb/Mar/April of your CA2 year. Since there is no Match, the early bird gets the proverbial worm. Many places will offer you a cardiac spot on the day of interview, or within a day or so of interviewing, and so you are at an obvious advantage if you can get one of those early interviews.

fellowship competitiveness is directly related to job market.. as job market becomes more competitive.. so do fellowships.. when there are plentiful jobs.. nobody does a fellowship.
