fellowship option after IM primary track

what about fellowship option after IM primary track? I think it may be still possible to get fellowship if you want to, but just more difficult than Categorical. It may depend on you previous research background (before residency), your publications, and what requirements for some specific fellowship. Is it right? Some friend asked me this Q. Any advice or opinion?

It makes very little difference as long as you have the time in a PC track to do research and electives in your chosen field.
