I am a DO at an ACGME program. I just started my intern year and am interested in applying to a heme/onc fellowship in the future. I only took Step II of USMLE, though (241). I was wondering if this will affect me while applying to fellowships. Do you current applicants advise taking USMLE Step III, or will fellowship programs accept my COMLEX Level III?

I will be applying to strictly ACGME fellowships (pretty sure the AOA fellowships are few and far between).

Anyways thanks for whatever help or advice you guys can give.

If programs say that they accept COMLEX, no need to take Step 3. Obviously you won't be able to apply for programs that require USMLE unless you also take Step 1, so Step 3 is kind of irrelevant.

Although my program accepts COMLEX, none of us are DOs and don't have any idea how to rank based on those scores (which are part of our scoring system). So the instruction we were given was ">600 on any COMLEX gets the applicant a 5 (scale of 1-5) on Step Scores, <600 gets them a 1." So I like to see at least one USMLE score so I can rationally score you on that part of your app. Your Step 2 score is good enough that it would get you a 4 in our scoring system.

Gutonc - for USMLE scores - are all the Step (1, 2 CK, 3) scores counted the same? Or is there one that you score higher than the other? step 3 > step 2 > step 1?
