Hey again, I have another question on research that I would like to get advice on. The medical school I was accepted to has great research opportunities, however, they do not offer the surgical-subspecialty fellowship I am interested in (and therefore do not offer research opportunities in this field). But, there is another university hospital nearby (~45min drive) that has this fellowship as well as research opportunities in this field. My school does some rotations at this hospital, so I think we are also affiliated? My questions are this:

1) Given that this is another university hospital, are they open to having med students from a different medical school do research there? I will say that this is only a branch of the university’s hospital, as their medical school (and thus their main teaching hospital) is in a completely different state. So as far as medical students doing rotations, I think my medical school is the only one who sends med students for rotations to this hospital, and we are certainly the closest medical student to this hospital by a few hours.
2) The fellowship I am interested in is very competitive and does not have any integrated pathways, so I have to do general surgery residency first then fellowship. Given that, does having research experience in this fellowship DURING medical school years help in anyway for when I apply for this specific fellowship? Could I put that in my app to show commitment to the field and would it make any difference when I apply for the fellowship?
3) Going off of question #2, would it make more sense for me to find research opportunities that relate to general surgery instead of my fellowship? If so, does general surgery research vs the fellowship research help me more or less or the same for placing into a good general surgery residency program?
4) Even if you said yes to questions 1/2, does it make sense to drive 45 minutes to this hospital to do research, assuming I have to be there in person and cannot do remote chart reviews.

Thank you!

Disclaimer: this is assuming that covid19 does not affect research opportunities. If I am aware of the risk of exposure, will PIs allow me to help with their clinical research?

There is no reason to go out of your way to do fellowship specific research in med school. Your job is to work towards the next goal. Your next goal, at this time, is general surgery. Any kind of surgical research (even non-surgical research) will help. They are looking for academic curiosity, academic productivity, academic potential, and commitment to the field. Being obsessed about a specific fellowship may also backfire if programs are concerned that you wouldn't be happy during residency/if you ended up not matching into that fellowship. Keep yourself open to everything

I don't think wasting valuable time traveling 45 mins for a specific fellowship based research when there is a decent chance you won't end up in gen surg and you may not end up pursuing that fellowship if you go into gen surg. You could do a lot of research in the 1 1/2 hours you'd be traveling to the other hospital
That's what I was worried about. Thanks for your reply. Hopefully it won't be hard to find research opportunities with the epidemic going on.

Anyone else have any similar or other comments?
