just curious, after your residency..do people in fellowship programs get paid a resident's salary, physician's salary, or somewhere in between? thanks 🙂

In general, they get paid a resident's salary. For example, if you were a cardiology fellow, it may go something like this:

Internal Medicine
PGY-1 38k
PGY-2 39k
PGY-3 40k
Cardiology Fellowship
PGY-4 41k
PGY-5 42k
PGY-6 43k
Interventional Cardiology
PGY-7 44k

Hope this helps.

the silver lining is that, as a board certified internist, you should be very comfortable with moonlighting, which can easily equal or even surpass your fellowship salary, if you find the time and are so inclined.

what is moonlighting? i noticed this term alot in this forum and just didnt know what it meant 🙂

A lot of ophtho fellowships your salary is supported by your billings, so you earn less than residency

Moonlighting
Working on the weekends or taking a shift at a different hospital. Docs I've worked with have made over a grand in a weekend. Some residency programs say these hours count towards your resident work-limit, and prohibit any of their residents from moonlighting.

some hospitals, like univ. of pittsburgh, will allow you to earn a moonlighting salary when on cardio fellowship call. its good money and a great motivator for call.
