Do you think you would need a fellowship to practice in a town of 30k? Can NP's do everything you can as a general Obgyn?

With the c-section rate averaging about 29% in the country, you could still manage patients in labor, its just that you need someone around to perform the c-sections.

Actually I'm a med student! I was wondering if I did general Obgyn, would I have to worry about NP's the way that Family docs are?

NP's do not operate - so they wouldn't be doing C/S or any gyn surgery. Most I'm aware of do not deliver babies - the CNMs do that. The NP's seemed to see patients in clinic but didn't come to the hospitals much.

My bad, I guess I misunderstood your first post. NP's cannot do surgery nor do they deliver babies at the hospital. They just do clinic/office management. I don't believe you would be in any danger from competition from NP's. Nurse midwives do clinic/office and deliver babies at the hospital. They could possibly "compete" with you for uncomplicated pregnancies and deliveries but they do not do GYN surgery or C-sections. I have not heard of any Ob-Gyn's complain about NP's or CNM's as far as competition. There are usually plenty of babies to go around.
