Any advice on whether or not to do a fellowship?

I understand the job market is tough these days and it appears as though the only jobs out there are looking fellowship trained individuals. It also appears as though non-fellowship trained anesthesiologists are now wanting to go back to do a fellowship.

What has everyone else's experience been? Would you recommend the extra year of training in Peds or CV even though one may not be passionate about it?

If you don't love it, don't do it.

I think its worth considering anesthesiology residency as a five year commitment and do a fellowship in whatever you enjoy. i think the extra year will pay off down the road.

Well I just signed for an ICU fellowship....kind of excited about it. Nice warm weather. Good schedule and super happy people

I think the job market is tough whether you are fellowship trained or not.

I'm a peds fellow who is as likely to take a job doing adults as doing peds because that is what's available where I need to live. I'd rather do adults than do academics, and unfortunately, most peds jobs are in academics.

I may get a good private practice job due to my fellowship training, but that's pretty questionable right now. I just mention my situation so that you realize that fellowship may help you a lot or it might just lose you a year of attending salary and cost you the pain of being a resident for an extra year.

Cardiac is probably a better option if you don't love peds because tons of private practices do hearts so you'll have a lot more private practice options where you can actually put your training to use.
