Fellowships: Paid/Unpaid?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Possible dumb question. so forgive me. Are some fellowship unpaid? How do you find out which one's aren't.

Yes, although I think a great majority are paid. The ones that are not paid are usually at prestigious programs like MSK at Duke, UVA, UCSD

You find out by going to the programs website or by contacting the program.

I think UCSD.

I think UCSD.

IIRC, UCSD MSK program is "paid", but the funding for only a handful of people is split evening among a bunch of fellows. So yeah, functionally, it's unpaid.

Almost all programs - even the big name ones - offer paid positions. It's just that some of them also offer unpaid ones, which are usually benefits-only positions.

No question is dumb.

GME fellowships are always paid. These include Neuro and IR. These fellowships are more standardized which has good and bad aspects to it.

Non-GME fellowships are not a standardized programs. There are all over the place. You may find a combo of MSK+chest in one program, a 6 month body in the other program and .... Most of these are paid. There are very few exceptions that are not paid. UCSD MSK for example or some of UVA MSK spots. But overall it is not the norm as far as I know.

For UCSD MSK, it was very popular and competitive in early 2000s when MSK fellowship was a guaranteed ticket to a lucrative job esp if it was with Resnick. People were more than happy to work for a year for free. However, these days MSK fellowships, even good ones are not difficult to get. So, I wonder UCSD can attract top applicants for free.

I believe MSK at Duke is only unpaid because of their 3+2 residency program. They have funding for all of their residents to do a fellowship there, but limited funding for outsiders.

All fellowships are - by definition - GME. There's no such thing as a non-GME fellowship. The distinction you're trying to make is between ACGME accredited and non-accredited programs.

Yep, I meant GME-accredited.

Thanks guys. Yep, UCSD MSK was the n of 1 I was working with. Had an attending tell me his "walk up hill both ways" story which included an unpaid fellowship in SD. Got me thinking about fellowships in general and didn't know if that was the norm in some places.
