What is the average number of years females practice dentistry? I know somebody out there had a dreaded interview with a malicious professor regarding women staying home with families and etc. Did he provide any info?

I heard that females have significantly less years of practice. Any thoughts on this or numbers?

I was speaking to a new dentist the other day (UOP 2000). We got talking about female dentists staying home and wanting to start a family and have kids and etc. (My dentist is on maternity leave. He was contracted to take on a day of her practice.)

If the class size of graduating dentists is 50m/50f, and most of females put in significantly less years, how will this affect the need for oral care access? More work for men?

Hey. I was the person who had an interviewer tell me that I shouldn't becomea dentist because I am female. He never did give me statistics on how long females practice. He just told me that they usually leave the profession to have children and don't return. I guess I can see how that would happen since having children is a huge responsibility but as I don't want children I don't think it will affect me. I talked to some female dentists and they say that most of the females in the field they know find a way to juggle family and career and work just as many hours in the end as their male counterparts. Male dentists may find it easier to retire earlier or just have more time for activites such as golf 🙂

GTChick,

You should have sued that school. I don't know why some schools are so hot headed that they say those type of discriminatory remarks. This similar situation happened that U.Washington last year when a dentist asked a girl why she wished to pursue dentistry if she was gonna get married and quit the dental profession to have children. She didn't even say she was gonna quit the dental profession.

Lawsuit waiting to happen. Good thing she accepted the offer of admission when the UW's dean apologized and offered admission to her over the phone. if I were her I would have taken it to the next level.

There is no justification to this type of behavior.

The field of dentistry is one of the best profession for anyone who wants a well rounded life! That includes women who plan on having a family. Since most DDS's and DMD's practice by appointment in private practice they are able to set their own hours. My dentist works about 35 hours per week and attends all his kids soccer, hockey and school events. And yes, he even plays golf on Wed. In fact his daughter is going into dentistry. Women were made for this field. They have a better esthetic eye and are better with colors. Many men are color blind and can't even pick a shade for a ceramic crown. Again, in many ways women are superior to men when it comes to this field. Maybe now I can get a date!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You aren't any better than those interviewers Hogan....

Desi-

It would have been a total over reaction to sue the school. The person was admitted. Does it matter that the interviewer wa bad. Losts of people have bad interviews. You dont see them filing lawsuits about it. I also would conjecture that the interviewer was fired. Which is all that would be called for.

i believe the two were half joking...

It was a pressure interview and the interviewer was trying to push my buttons. Maybe a lot of women do quit to have children. That doesn't apply me anytime soon so it is a bridge I will cross when I get there.

A women will be president in the next decade! Also the White House Dentist will be female! Go for your dream and be proud of being a Women Dentist!

Yes, i was half-joking, okay only 20% joking. However, I do not like schools with huge heads thinking that they could say anything and get away with it by saying it is to test the applicant.

Asking questions about religion, marriage, sexual orientation unless the applicant talks about it is illegal. No questions about it.

I thought that women in all professions have children, not only dentistry.
It's illegal that interviewer asks about your reproduction plan. If any one asks you about that, you should report it and request another interview.
Don't they have anything else to ask beside the repro. system?
How annoying it can be, to fly out how many thousand miles, and defend your future repro. plan. Nothing can be more stupid.
