Hey, it just seems to me that I know SO many more females that get into med school. And then when I look at people with similar "stats" that get in (in an effort to get some hope) they always turn out to be females ---> so I think to myself again, man, I'm fuc*ed ...

Now, it could be that all the people I talk to happen to be females or they are just all good applicants, but I somehow get the feeling that this is not true.

any experience with this phenomenon? It would make sense that med schools would be more progressive, but this doesn't necessarily mean that they do this. Take care.

I am a female, and I have noticed that trend as well. However, I do think that it could be related to the fact that there are generally more females than males at undergraduated campuses. So it is only reasonable to assume that more females than males would apply and be accepted. So don't give up hope. You can do it. 😉

when you look at enrolled stats at most schools- there are usually more males than females IN GENERAL... It's usually pretty close..(like 48/52). It could be an internet-related phenomenon as well....maybe girls are more likely to post their joys of acceptances on these forums...where guys may be more likely to not post... SDN is not really a random sampling of the med school applicants... i don't know if most of the SDNers are girls or not...it would be interesting to find out.

I think for many schools there is still a preference for female applicants because of the number disparities (twice as many men as women for some places). The underlying philosphy is that - in filling the needs of the medical community - more are met by taking a female applicant with similar scores than a male.

I know that's a pretty tough pill to swallow when you're busting your ass trying to realize rewards for all the hard work you've put in.

Hey all,

I know that when I was at one interview, this topic actually came up. My interviewer asked me if there were a lot more females than males interviewing that day and when I said it was mostly females he said that he wasn't surprised. He said that it is getting to be a lot harder to get into the top schools if you are female because so many girls work so hard in undergrad. He simply made the point to contrast when he was applying 40 years ago. At my undergrad as well, it seemed like there were a ton more female premeds than male.

Happy Holidays =)

I think a lot of science minded guys ended up going to computer science or related tech fields in the last five years, rather than going into medicine. I wonder if that's changing again now.

the average mcat score for males is a bit higher though (check out aamc).

Hey everyone! One of my interviewers directly asked me why the # of women applicants keeps on greatly increasing while men are slowly decreasing. So based on that question, I would assume theres at least some validity to the original poster's theory
