My roommate recently switched from Urology to Ob/Gyn for his residency. Does anyone know how competitive REI fellowships are? What does it take in residency to match?

Hey! I don't know first-hand, but I've heard from friends in Ob/Gyn that REI is an extremely difficult match (there are only 30-ish spots in the U.S. and each spot is highly, highly coveted). I'm sure that matching takes connections and research. You friend should start by networking with REIs in his residency.

Good luck!

REI is considered a competitive fellowship.

In 2013 there were 45 positions for 38 programs. 65 applicants with 43 matching and 22 not matching. 2 programs went unfilled, likely intentionally.

The best way to match is to go to a residency that has an REI fellowship and match in house. Otherwise go to a well known residency that is highly regarded and do well.

It probably wasn't the best idea to switch from urology to OB GYN for the sole purpose of trying to get into REI.
