I understand how both these "processes" work but how are they linked? I never thought about it but now I am curious.

So does Meiosis first happen then fertilization?

But then I thought in the chromosomes from both parents have to cross over somewhere...so how does that happen?

which came first the chicken or the egg?

the point is to understand the process in relation to a parental generation going through meiosis and producing viable gametes -- note the difference between males and females

then copulation
then fertilization

Meiosis produces the haploid cells (egg or sperm) that ultimately join during fertilization.

Meiosis, must occur to produce gametes with 1n number of chromosomes. these cells that were produce after meiosis, containin 1n number of chromosomes, are called gametes. these gametes (egg or sperm) are joined together in the process of fertilization.
if you use cells that have not gone through meiosis, polyploidy or polysomy meight occur, meaning you will have more than needed number of chromosomes.
Hope this helps.
