fever with hiccough

my dad is suffering from fever,cold for the past two days. he is also having hiccough. what is the reason for hiccough?.
he is prescribed to take paracetamol,antibiotic and a sedative.for hiccough he is taking ranitidine.
hiccough still persists.he is hypertensive patient also.
