Hello everyone,

I am currently enrolled at the Marshall University DPT program. Prior to my acceptance I had a lot of questions myself regarding graduate school, interviews, enrollment, what to expect, etc. I know first hand the anxiety and what it is like to juggle so many unknowns, so I am happy to answer questions.

Thanks for offering your help! I have an interview next month and was curious about what to expect?

No problem. As you may already know the interview will be a group interview and there will be multiple sessions. If I am not mistaken interviews will be held Jan 7-9 twice a day, mornings and evenings. Each group of applicants will consist of roughly 40-50 students. So you figure a total of about 240-300 students will be there over the course of 3 days. Expect a meet and greet with faculty and students(I will most likely be there), an overview of the program, an activity, a tour, a group interview with 6-8 students and 1 faculty in small seminar rooms that are equipped with an audio/video recording system (not sure if they are actually used during the interviews), and a 1 on 1 interview with a faculty member to discuss your application/your profile and any questions you might have.

Yes, that is exactly what will happen. So as you can imagine they aren't very personal questions. I think I recall being asked my pet peeve and what I do when it happens (i.e. people dragging their feet when they walk). I would advise you not to be a wallflower during this. Interact with other people in your group!

Thank you sou much for your help! I have an interview as well on January 9th. I am planning on wearing a suit and tie. Is that what you did? What are things you like about the program? Any negative aspects about the program that you can think of? Are you paying out of state tuition? Thanks again so much for your help!

No problem! Yes a suit and tie would be very appropriate, that is what I wore. Actually now that I think about it I packed the wrong color tie and ended up just wearing my suit! What I really like about the program is the faculty and their openness to change. We have some very passionate faculty members who sincerely care about both the students and PT as a profession. For me one negative is that since this program is relatively new, it seems everyone is still finding their place within the curriculum and sometimes it seems some professors are unaware of what other professors are doing. So what ends up happening is you may be introduced to a new topic with the assumption information "X" has already been covered in detail when in fact it has not. As a student that can be frustrating. To be fair though, this is graduate school and the onus is on the student to be prepared. Also I think in time issues like these will resolve themselves and it is a concern I have already brought to their attention.

EDIT: Forgot about the tuition part. Yes I am paying OOT. It is about 25.5k a year, which is relatively inexpensive compared to other out of state schools. If you are applying as an OOS student, you will remain that way for the remainder of the program. You cannot live there for one year, claim residency, and then get in-state tuition. Their med school is the same way. Add that to my negative list.

I was hoping to be accepted right off the bat, but hopefully I am high enough on the waitlist to get in! I know that they don't share the order of the waitlist, but do you know how many people they waitlist by chance?

Hmm I am not sure. I imagine anyone who went to the interviews would make it on to the waitlist as long as nothing seemed out of place. This year they interviewed 150. I know now interviews were based on competitiveness. What day was your interview initially scheduled for and were you AM or PM?

Oh ok! I interviewed on Saturday Morning. (Jan 9)

I may have given you a tour then, I was there Saturday morning. If you interviewed Saturday morning and that was your original time (i.e. no rescheduling) that means you are in the top 100-125 out of 150. Programs almost always draw from their waitlists to fill seats so stay hopeful! We had a student join 2 days into the program.

I am pretty sure that they mean the same thing, just different term.
