Filing a complaint against RFU BMS Program

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I recently emailed my PI to update her on the application process and she told me "I'm sure you will get in somewhere." If I don't, should I then suggest that my undergraduate institution (ranked at very top of national universities) lose its accreditation?

The point is that mentors, advisors, etc. try to encourage. I did this myself as an academic advisor working with a group of premeds.

Assuming one advisor did in fact tell you halfway through the year "I'm sure you will get in to this medical school," it's a huge leap to accept that as a tacit agreement. Is the advisor even on the admissions committee?

I understand you must have worked hard and it comes as a huge discouragement not to be accepted. But, maybe you could learn from experience? Any complaint would simply make you sound bitter. It would be best I think to portray your experience in the best light possible to DO schools. If a Caribean school "tacitly" promises you a residency and you can't match, I doubt there is a Caribean board of accreditation to which you could complain.

The carrib schools get their accredition through the medical board of california which is the standard that the other 49 states use. So, in a way they are accredited.

Secondly, There is a huge difference between encouragement and giving a professional opionion, especially given that a huge sum of money was involved to the tune of 50,000 dollars. I asked whether I should drop out, given that I didn't have any As, and they said "no"

Finally, I JUST WANT TO MAKE A GENERAL ANNOUCEMENT. ANYBODY THAT HAS NOT GONE THROUGH A SPECIAL MASTERS PROGRAM OR IS NOT QUALIFIED IN LEGAL MATTERS DO NOT POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'M LOOKING FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE GONE THROUGH A SIMILAR SITUATION THAT I HAVE GONE THROUGH

I DO NOT WANT PEOPLE PASSING JUDGEMENT ON ME WHEN THEY HAVE NOT GONE THROUGH THE EXPERIENCE THAT I HAVE BEEN THROUGH
YOU ARE JUST PISSING THE LIVING **** OUT OF ME IF YOU POST JUST TO PASS A NEGATIVE JUDGEMENT

Wrong. I suggest www.valuemd.com for further information.

I'm a lawyer, so I guess I'm "qualified" to post a response. While I am not specifically aware of the law in your state, my gut feeling is that your chance of getting your money back, through litigation or otherwise, is essentially zero. Generally, any oral promises made to you are not going to allow you to overcome the written guidelines that say there is no guarantee of admission to the medical school.

Getting Bs in med school classes is nothing to be ashamed of. Since there were people with higher grades than you who were admitted, there must have been something else lacking in your application. Maybe they just didn't like you. Who knows?

Don't waste any more time or energy on your anger towards your school. Finish your degree (if you haven't already done so), and make the best of your situation. Do what you need to do to improve your application, and apply to other US MD and DO schools, and the Big 4 caribbean schools (St. George's, AUC, Ross, SABA). You may even want to reapply to your current school, assuming you haven't burned any bridges.

Good luck.

Whoa buddy, sounds like someone hasn't read through the rules of the internet. Please see rules 6, 8, 19, 25, and most importantly 24.

Three Elements of a Verbal Contract

In order to be considered valid, a verbal contract must contain three elements: offer, acceptance, and consideration.

• Offer: The person making the offer in a verbal contract must communicate their intent to enter into a contract. A verbal contract is not considered valid if all parties do not agree to the terms of the offer. Also, verbal contracts are only valid for a specified period of time and not indefinitely.

• Acceptance: A verbal contract is not valid until the offer is accepted. The acceptance of a verbal contract occurs when the person to whom the contract is offered voluntarily indicates agreement to its terms and conditions.

• Consideration: In addition to an offer and acceptance, verbal contracts must contain consideration. This means that each side must give the other something of value for the agreement to be binding. In most verbal contracts, this is an exchange of money, such as a down payment. However, in some cases, it is not money but a promise that is exchanged.

The courts would probably find the program guidelines to be enforceable as a written contract, and as another poster said, the guidelines clearly state that there is no guarantee of admission into medical school upon completion of the program. Even if the OP's advisers promised the OP he would get in (and that's a BIG "if"), this oral statement would not be considered because it contradicts what is in writing. It's called the parol evidence rule.

I did an SMP, so I get to comment...woohoo!

OP, you did not get in because of your GPA. Plain and simple. You said they told you that you would get accepted if you continue to do well, or something to that effect (I dont' feel like looking for that post again). I will tell you that anything below a 3.5-3.6 is NOT a good GPA in an SMP, ESPECIALLY when you did worse in the med classes! Those are the classes you're expected to excel in, so that you can prove to the adcom that you can handle the course load (and as someone mentioned, most SMPs don't even have you take EVERY 1st year med class...just a few). So there's your answer. You did not do well enough. Nobody's fault but your own.
As for them taking people who supposedly did worse than you, those applicants most likely had a higher MCAT, more/better EC's, more intriguing life story, or one of the other many factors that go into med school acceptance. But a GPA like yours, without those other things, would be a huge signal to toss your app out.

I didn't expect anybody to feel sorry for me thats not the whole point. The point is that when you went to go see an advisor in the middle of the program, I asked them if I was on my way of getting accepted into the medical school, and they assured me that if I keep up the grades that I had I would get in. I'm not trying to whine about anything. I'm just pissed that I could have dropped early on and saved a whole bunch of money if they had been truthful to me.

I didn't expect a bunch of piece of **** premeds and med students under the cover anonymity to completely blast me for no reason.

I didn't feel I was I was entitled to anything. Y'all should stop pretending like your house M.D in trying to uncover my motives and life history from the two or three posts I've made on this thing. The average at this med school was 80% and my grades were well above average tho I was unable to get an A in any of the classes.

big "if"... its the if in life.... if u miss the if, u basically are effed for LifE.

I guess, take more BS classes to boost ur GPA and reapply next cycle... work on ur MCAT score too...

This thread is a joke. That is all.

Your obviously ******ed enough to think that sister rosie will refund your money.

It must be a joke. I do not know of a single SMP program that guarantees an acceptance, although there are many that will guarantee you an interview if you do well enough academically. I hope you realize how strong of a statement it is to guarantee admission based on completion of a program...you were tacitly assured that you would probably get in if you did well. There is no written agreement you signed...you just misunderstood the entire point of an SMP.

I do sympathize with you, however. I was heavily considering an SMP but I opted not to go for one, for exactly the same reasons you listed. You end up with a useless degree, tons of debt and it would not have particularly helped me.

finally, i just want to make a general annoucement. Anybody that has not gone through a special masters program or is not qualified in legal matters do not post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm looking for people who have gone through a similar situation that i have gone through

i do not want people passing judgement on me when they have not gone through the experience that i have been through
you are just pissing the living **** out of me if you post just to pass a negative judgement

omfg hax noob hax0rz zomfgbbq

I am considering filing a complaint to the illinois board of higher education against Rosalind Franklin University. While I was in the progam I was tacitly assured by the faculty advisors that I would be accepted in their medical school after I successfully complete the program. The completely mislead me into finishing the program while I could have dropped out early on. At this point I am 50,000 dollars in debt with a degree that has no real value. And, I haven't been granted admission in their medical school.

Also, if anyone knows of a good lawyer that will work on contigency, please let me know

Seriously? This is about the 5th SDN username/sockpuppet you've created to complain about your situation. In every thread, you quickly go from polite to abusive when people disagree with you.

No, you're not going to be able to sue your way into med school or get your tuition back. You'd be better off spending the money on therapy to work through your obvious issues.

I really don't give a ****. They took ******s over me, which completely perplexes my mind as to what my application lacked. Oh by the way I had a 3.0 in the med school classes and As in the bull**** nonmedical school classes so my GPA was around a 3.3.

I really want them to burn in hell. If I can display what the school is really like, it'll burn their reputation. I want them to suffer.

This kinda sounds like me earlier this year. Do you guys remember when I got all pissed and wrote about how I deserved more interviews last cycle? Although I never called the people who got in instead of me "******s" *cough* even tho they were *cough*. jk

Anyway, Johnny, it's fun to be pissed. Enjoy it, it's a good feeling. Till you wake up the next morning feeling like a cry baby *****.

Oh hey, by the way, Johnny - there's a legal advice website that has a forum. That's probably a better place to post this. Otherwise we are all just going to laugh about it.

This is the second one...the other three weren't me.

At some point the OP will just need to spend a few bucks on a 1/2 hour consultation with a REAL lawyer to discuss his/her legal options, and stop trying to get info from an anonymous online forum.

As I've previously stated, the chances of the OP getting tuition money back is virtually zero.

My account got deactivated because I was expressing some very strong views.

Lol, you mean like this:

If you've gotten banned once, you shouldn't (a) repost basically the same thread that got you banned in the first place and (b) should try to change your behavior.

When exactly did they promise you? in the beginning of the program, middle, end? and how did you do gradewise?

i dont know any medical postbac program that guarantees its student acceptance...maybe you should talk to the school's dean or your faculty advisor.

MSU guarantees acceptance upon completion of their ABLE program.

I should look into that program

None of us have to jump out of a 3rd story window to know that it is going to hurt with you hit the ground. Experience is not the best teacher but wisdom is the best teacher. If you don't like what you get back from a public message board, don't read it, but the all caps insult tends to confirm that you may have a bit to learn about the medical school admissions process and in your case, ignorance is not bliss. After all, you put your stuff out there in the first place. I wish you well but something in the above post tells me that you have a long road ahead that likely doesn't involve medicine. Invest well because you are going to need the finances.

Offshore schools are NOT accredited in this country or by any state board and meet no US standards. WHO accreditation does not equal LCME accreditation which is why many offshore grads have difficulty entering residency and practice in this country. You get what you pay for and anyone who abides by the TOS of the SDN can post in any thread on SDN as this is a public message board and subject to moderation. Again, if you don't like what you read, don't read it.

Exactly! At least someone agrees with me with regards to the risk of an SMP. I'm really sorry to bring up this old thread, but I have just been accepted into the RFU BMS program and I am planning on withdrawing due to reasons posted on this thread. It's just too much of a risk.

Out of curiosity, what GPA does on have to achieve in this SMP in order to get into med school? 3.5+? On another note, I have noticed DO SMP's to only require 3.0...

I do hope the OP has realized their flaws but blaming the school is not the answer. You have to do your homework before you invest this kind of $$$ in your future that could potentially wreck your chances of getting in anywhere!

MAYBE WE SHOULD QUIT TELLING PEOPLE TO SEARCH THE FORUM FIRST... AND THEN THIS ISH WOULDN'T HAPPEN??:idea:
