Hello,

Just wondering if there are any docs out there who have done or do fill in work. Is it worthwhile to do if what I am really looking for currently is a full time position? Is it "dues" that a fresh grad or developing doctor needs to pay or is holding out for that permanent spot ok?

FYI, I've not worked yet since grad.

Thanks in advance.

Jonah

I think it really just depends on your perspective and lifestyle. If you can financially swing it, I would hold out to get the position you desire. I see no harm in doing fill in work. I wouldn't sign a contract that has some bogus non-compete clause in it though. Are you open to moving to find the permanent position you crave?

When you say you have not worked since graduation, when did you graduate? A few months ago? Do you have a license yet?

I think it's very worthwhile to work fill in or a couple of part time positions.

First of all, it will get you some money. I'm assuming you're not a trust fund baby so we all need money.

Secondly, I think it's very valuable for young doctors to work in as many different practices as they can. It gives you a good opportunity to see what works, what doesn't work, what you like and don't like about the different practice modalities.

But most importantly, if your goal is ultimately to own your own practice, it gives you a sense of how you want to do things because sometimes you THINK you know what you want to do or where you want to go but you sometimes have experiences that make you think "well, I never thought of doing it THAT way...."

So yea....I would do the fill ins.

Excellently said! It definitely gives the new doctor real world experience in practice maanagement, clinical and refractive skills.
