Current senior planning to apply in 2026. Trying to finalize my extracurriculars for my application. I will be focused on studying for the MCAT(taking it in April/May), graduation, and finishing my honors senior thesis, so there won't be any additional opportunities to add things. Don't have PS or school list made yet.
Stats: 4.0 GPA at Big State School. Majoring in Health Policy & Administration. Double minoring in Biology + Natural Sciences.
Below are the ECs that I have already decided to keep for sure. Need some help in choosing what other ECs would be best to add.
Clinical Employment:
400 hrs - Patient Transport (most meaningful)
200 hrs - Patient Safety Companion - stays with patients to monitor their behavior, prevent falls, or self-harm.
Clinical Volunteer -
250 hrs - Hospital #1 Volunteer -
Non-clinical Volunteer: volunteered in the emergency department (doing typical ED volunteer work) andon the 6th floor, where I rounded and stimulated conversation with patients who had dementia. (some study talked about how doing these kind of stimulating activities leads to better patient outcomes after discharge)
Non Clinical Volunteer -
250 hrs - Back2School Giveaway - Organize in partnership with my dad to hold a donation drive to distribute 250 bags of school supplies to underserved students and promote educational equity in the community. Has been going up for 10+ years.
Leadership:
150 hrs - Pre-Med Club President - Re-established an inactive club. Introduced resources, invited medical professionals to come speak, had medical schools and their students come and speak at our school, had activities like a suturing workshop, and miscellaneous discussions about talking about ethical dilemmas in medicine. Started talks with 2 medical schools to potentially have an affiliation agreement with our school (unaware of how far this progressed). Feels a big significance to me because this was done at a branch campus of a big state school, which is often seen as having significantlyfewers resources and overshadowed by the opportunities at the main campus.
150 hrs - Teaching Assistant Chem/Bio Lab - TA for approx 90+ students
Research:
400 hrs - Clinical Research Intern/Associate - CRI at a big academic hospital. Worked and enrolled patients in studies for both industry sponsors and physicians with their studies. Notably, during my time here, “played around with the EHR” and was able to extremely streamline the process of finding patients for the studies. Reduced the time spent in looking for patients by so much.I really enjoyed my time here, but I'm not sure if I would put it most meaningful bc Im not the biggest fan of research.
200 hrs - Senior Honors Thesis: Doing senior honors thesis about the effect of screentime mental health and substance use amongst college students in the U.S. Using a nationally representative sample that includes over 500 colleges and I think over 80,000 total responses.
Shadowing:
Shadowing - 100 Hours total
40 hrs ED doctors during the program I was in
50 hrs volunteered as an OR aide, who had the opportunity to shadow the surgeons during their procedures occasionally
10 hrs internal medicine shadowing during a free clinic
Hobbies:
Volleyball (Most Meaningful) - 2,000 Hours - Been doing since high school. Sports in general have been the most meaningful thing in my life. Back-to-back state runner-up in HS. Played club volleyball for 3 years in college. Lots of open gyms, pickups, and stories.
The rest are up for grabs. I'm not really sure which ones are best to include.
250 hrs HomeCare Assistant - Really not that significant, and I don't have anything valuable from it tbh. Helped with daily living activities and supported the individuals with their daily activities.
250 hrs - Hospital #2 Volunteer - Patient Advocate Liaison: round on patients and ensure they have everything they need, or if they wanted to relay something to nursing that they needed. Operating Room Aide: help with cleaning and preparing ORs for surgeries. Cool experience, and I was able to talk to and shadow some of the surgeons with their cases.
Travelling (Hobby)- enjoy travelling. I hope to continue to do so for the rest of my life. Projected to study abroad 3 times during my undergrad and had 1 medical brigade trip to Guatemala (cool experience but don't feel too compelled to include the medical brigade part of bc of voluntourism. During my time there, it was strictly business tho and full focus on actual medical care and the clinic.
200 hrs maybe Student Government Association - Elected as the sole student to represent and speak on behalf of 6,000 students on campus before the University Faculty Senate. Served as the designated liaison, ensuring student concerns and perspectives were represented and addressed. Happened during a somewhat important time when the university was making decisions on closing some branch campuses. Kinda ties in with trying to promote educational access and equity (a lot of these branch campuses are for non-traditional and lower-income students)
75-100 hrs Emergency Medicine Research Assistant Program - weekly 4-hour emergency room shifts to acquire a patient-oriented clinical experience through the shadowing of residents/attending in the ED. Weekly 90-minute classes regarding medical research, medical ethics, human subjects protection, study design, data collection, statistical analysis, and trial outcome reporting
Honors/Awards - 4.0 GPA awards, school community service awards, 1 award was “Recognizes a student whose outstanding qualities of character, scholarship, leadership, and citizenship positively influenced fellow students, the well-being of their campus, and the University”
Clinic Volunteer - 70 hrs total over a couple of months. Helped with reaching out to individuals to get them registered (specifically worked in eligibility) to be seen at the clinic, which was focused on a low-income community.
Health Policy Case Study Poster Presentation - a case study presentation that focused on emergency department overcrowding. Outlining the issue + potential solutions.
Thanks for the help!
