Just a note to encourage those who may be on the verge of giving up….. SEVEN years later … I got the call!

I got accepted to medical school!
Keep on pressing toward your goal, ignore those who speak death to your dreams and focus on the finish line. It is possible! To God be the glory!!!

Why 7 years later? Have you been actively trying all these 7 years?

I'm guessing you got accepted to Rowan SOM? I believe they call for acceptances right?

Many schools call for acceptances. Last year, I believe MUCOM did some calls. I also recall people saying they got calls from ACOM and LMU-DCOM. I wouldn't be surprised if others did too. I know a decent amount of MD schools that also call.

After being wait listed twice, I wanted to continue to advance myself while I worked on MCAT and other things. So I pursued 'medical science' if you will. I will graduate with my PhD this summer ( I also received a Master's in that time). Never gave up medicine but genuinely focused in on being a PhD student. Reapplied this past summer…. and here we are! To all those re-applying: Don't stand still while you wait to be accepted … improve on anything and everything, not just for med school acceptance but also in life and NEVER give up! If this is something you feel called to do go for it! The journey all comes together… Im certain my journey will benefit my future patients.

LECOM B and AZCOM sometimes. Others have told me they didn't get calls from there though. I don't know why it's random, I would think they have some standard procedure to notify people of acceptances..

Awesome! Congrats!!!!

Way to go, man!! So you get to put BS, MS, PhD, and DO after your name once it's all said and done. That is awesome, I love it!

not to crap on the moment, but having an alphabet soup after your name is not the best thing career wise. many places don't look favorably upon people who collect degrees. but I do want to congratulate the OP for what seems like a great moment awaiting. His resolve alone will earn him a great career. cheers future physician!

You sure about that?

At one place I interviewed the interviewer was a DO surgeon w/ MBA, JD, and MA in Chemistry. Actually, it was at the school you're going to attend.

My brother was looking up dental programs and one place had a dean w/ MD, DDS, JD, MBA.

I have respect for someone who can work with different disciplines and combine those perspectives.

Congrats OP! Best of Luck on the years ahead.

On another note, I'd love to see a thread/discussion pop up about this:

the reason this is a problem is that it shows you are someone who is not well experienced in working outside of school and/or you are someone who wants to stay out of the job market because you can't handle work outside. also some may take the numerous degrees as a sign that the person is not capable of focusing on one task and will leave early to pursue something else. this is not a steadfast rule for all, but some can be selective against those with more letters in their title than in their name. the positive way this can be worked around is that you leave off some of the degrees in your resume when applying for certain jobs where the degree is not important.

Wow that is some serious dedication. If I started doing a PhD program, I'm pretty sure I'll be too burnt out to pursue a medical degree after

It's a waste of time and money. Nobody can be an expert in all those fields at once.

That's not the way I'm looking at it. If you look at the CV of the 2 guys I mentioned they got some of their degrees almost 20 years after getting their medical degrees.

I think certain places would like you to be multidisciplinary education for a higher position or need.

I know a few people who went back for an MPH or MBA after practicing medicine for a decade or two. Yeah, they had to take time off but now their salary is almost double (at least for the physician who went back for an MBA).

CONGRATS! I did the EXACT same thing you did (BA, MA, PhD, MD/DO starting in this fall!) and it took me about 8 years, but it's so worth it in the end. I am so happy for you! What's your PhD in, if I may ask?
And where are you heading off too?

That's true if we speak of one extra degree to get ahead in a position where it requires it, but nobody requires MD + DDS + JD + MBA at the same time. I could probably swallow a maxillofacial surgeon with an MD, DDS (required for the job) getting an MBA, but the JD? Come on.

Some places will have MD/DDS and then you can do JD/MBA later.

What's the old saying... hit two birds stoned.

Go crap somewhere else.

This has to be towards the top of the stupidest things I have seen you post. Earning a PhD and then D.O. is NOT going to make any negative difference in securing a job as a physician. "Many places", could you define that for me? I'm not aware of any employers that notify potential applicants that if you have more than two degrees you should avoid applying here. Maybe if you have 5 different PhDs in art history you could be perceived as trying to avoid the "real world", but for you to think a hospital will not hire someone because they earned a PhD before a D.O. is just plain stupid.

Why can't people on here just say congratulations and keep their stupid little comments to themselves. It seems like some people on here, specifically @guylewis , are not able to boss people around or influence others in the real world so they come on here spewing their "know it allness." Really @guylewis , do you think that comment about having too many degrees was really necessary? Are you in charge of some large company that doesn't hire people if they have accumulated extra degrees you perceive to be unnecessary?

Jealousy. It's not like OP went and got five different masters degrees. Earning a few different degrees in succession like he did isn't going to hurt him at all. People just like to project their insecurities. I see nothing wrong with someone who clearly loves to learn and I highly doubt any reasonable workplace would, either. I also can't even dream up a situation where a medical doctor would be denied a job solely based on the fact that he has those degrees. It's laughable to even suggest such a thing.

I agree, @guylewis must be really jealous and insecure. @guylewis has a really low tolerance for those who he doesn't agree with (and he isn't the only one). @Jamaica, it will be neat for you to have the PhD and D.O. initials after your name. Good for you.

Jamaica, MS, PhD, DO

I was completely unaware that any of my posts were taken down although i really couldn't care any less no matter how hard i tried. I'm not ashamed to be conservative or Christian. Nothing anyone can say or do on here will make me "pissed." You must invest way to much time and energy on here to think i was pissed. You must be a bitter, negative, and jealous person to cut those down who disagree with you or have accomplished more than you, like the OP getting a PhD before med school.

Are you going to cut those down in your medical school class who do better? I sense you're a gunner in training.

For a troll you're acting like quite the petulant child. Apparently you didn't read my original posts, just saw what you wanted to see to attack me (quite the compassionate Christian you are) so here you go:

"but I do want to congratulate the OP for what seems like a great moment awaiting. His resolve alone will earn him a great career. cheers future physician!"

Followed by this:

"this is not a steadfast rule for all, but some can be selective against those with more letters in their title than in their name. the positive way this can be worked around is that you leave off some of the degrees in your resume when applying for certain jobs where the degree is not important."

I hope your read your bible more carefully than you read my posts. Though if you did you wouldn't have overlooked that whole part on judging others

It's the typical response on here, mention any conservative or Christian values and there will always be someone to call that person a troll. I'm not going to repeat myself. The only thing more i will say is most would agree with me that your comment about getting to many degrees will make finding a job as a physician difficult was not only wrong, but also stupid and not necessary. I'll let you have the last word so your anonymous internet ego can be satisfied.

you like playing the victim a lot. grow up. medical school is full of people with different opinions than your own and if you don't change your attitude you are going to be eaten alive or become a pariah. either way, i pray to the gods (both old and new) that I nor my family ever become your patient in the future.

They should sign up for the military while they're at it.

Come to think of it, Lt. Congressman Dr. Mad Jack, MD, DDS, MBA, JD, Esq, Ret kind of has a nice ring to it. I think I've found my calling.

I'm in complete agreement. I have experienced this myself on here. There is a really low tolerance for those who have different viewpoints. I have been called a troll a few times because of this. My faith in God and my belief in creationism has been mocked on here hard by others. I'm not sure what makes it acceptable to call someone else a troll just because they have different viewpoints/beliefs. I absolutely reject the theory of evolution but I won't call anyone a troll or make any other derogatory terms because I'm not in agreement with them. Those who have such little tolerance for others are going to have issues relating to patients with different viewpoints.

Despite the tone on SDN; the link above is a survey from around 2011 and confirms that the great majority of physicians do in fact have religious/spiritual beliefs. For those of you who advocate your chosen religion of believing in the existence of no God in an attempt to mock those who have faith in God; you're a minority.

I didn't notice GC1000 playing the victim at all. GC1000 was simply pointing out that you were completely wrong in your conclusion that having the masters and PhD degrees could hinder future physician employment opportunities. To borrow a line from WalSlave; it is "laughable." I find it pathetic that you decided your comment about crapping on the moment was important or added any value to this thread.

You (guylewis) are good at name calling and have a poor attitude. Your initial reaction didn't start off with a congratulations. You decided it was better to criticize the OP first.

To borrow a line from GC1000; you are definitely a gunner in training.

Maybe you could publish a guide so we know when we should quit obtaining degrees or which degrees will hurt us in the future. I never would have guessed a PhD could keep me from working as a physician in certain medical settings. Show us all with your superior intellectual abilities.

You know you're in pre-osteo when even a thread meant to celebrate someone's acceptance has been turned into an argument about creationism

So Jamaica, did you go for the Asti or a Brut when you got accepted?

Or are you.... Going on vacation...... *very very almost inaudible "aww yeah"*

Seriously tho, when did this forum become this absurd and when did everyone start taking offense at every thing anyone says?

Can you just use your indoor voices and play nice?

You know you're in pre-osteo when even a thread meant to celebrate someone's acceptance has been turned into an argument about creationism

Try reading the thread again. There has been no arguing about creationism. The only arguing has been about guylewis and his incredibly inaccurate statements about how extra degrees could make it difficult for the OP to find a job as a physician.

I don't think he said that. Just that having an enormous amount of degrees isn't necessarily a good thing. In the case of the OP it's not an issue.
Actually in all reality the only one arguing is gc1000 who basically exploded with the rage of 4 suns and myself when Hannah Montana was canceled ( I.e 1.2 suns).

Again, let's get back to the topic at hand.

You're right but somehow creationism was brought up anyway in a thread that should be purely congratulatory. My point was that there shouldn't be an argument at all and it is happening in nearly every thread

You can believe whatever you want and I have no problem with that. Just please don't feel the need to let everybody know in every thread.

Now before you start thinking this is a personal attack, just hold your horses. You are not the only person who has mentioned it and the people who argue with you are just as annoying so yea, I just wanted to get that off my chest.

Anyway, congrats OP. Welcome to the class of 2018

Actually, guylewis did make the inaccurate statement and it was 100% irrelevant to this thread. As GC1000 stated, the pattern of certain people on sdn consistently inserting criticizing comments about others. Guylewis had no business to crap on the moment. It demonstrates his insecurities and short comings.

I agree, it should not have been brought up. I was just trying to demonstrate my point of the bickering that goes on constantly.

more conservatives with their fake outrage. *sigh*. OP, I will repeat what I said in my first post: " I do want to congratulate the OP for what seems like a great moment awaiting. His resolve alone will earn him a great career. cheers future physician!"

see, your problem is that you think this is my own idea. but it's not.

Look guys, there's enough pretentious coming from me. I do not like competition. So place nice or else I'll lose my job.
