Finally got an interview! Can anyone who interviewed at LECOM-Erie give me some advice as far as the interview day/interview questions??

Can someone explain the PBL/ISP/LDP acronyms? I know PBL is problem-based learning but I'm not familiar with the other ones.

ALso anyone know if its easy to transfer from LECOM-Erie to LECOM-Bradenton after your first year or semester?

And finally, if you want to do PBL, don't you have to go to the Florida campus??

i'll help you out a little. The pbl is the problem based learning, and you can do that pathway at erie, and it is the sole pathway at bradenton. Isp is the independent learning pathway and LDP is the lecture dependent pathway. the interview day is really relaxed and they will explain the pathways to you in more depth. there is just one half hour interview with three interviewers and all of them do their best to make you feel comfortable. sorry but i have no idea about the transfer thing, but if you are worried about pbl like i said you can also do it in erie. hope that helps a little and congrats on the interview!

PBL-- problem based learning. Its a relatively new approach to medicine that uses actual cases that you and a team work on solving. Like, you have a patient that comes in and complains about this pain in this part of her body. Now it is your job to go and learn everything you can about that part of the body or organ and what may be causing this...blah, goes on and on.

ISP-- Idependent, you do it yourself. You teach yourself medicine. I don't know how much I actually agree with this pathway and I am not even sure if they are allowed to attend lectures but the name pretty much says it all.

Interview day-- very laid back, the interview is done from a sheet, everyone has the same questions asked and no questions not on the sheet will be asked. The first question is almost always, "is there anything in your file that we don't know about..." But, as said above, go to the interview feed back portion of SDN for a list of questions and such.

Keep in mind that after the first few weeks, ISP has the longest waiting list of students wanting to get into it. You are given modules to learn (biochem, pharm., etc.) and are tested on one about every 1-2 weeks. The advantage is you aren't forced to go to class like everyone else- and most people find lecture a waste of time anyways (talk to any med student).

ISP is basically LECOM's way to let you be a "normal" med student (i.e., one who doesn't go to lecture and studies from notes/books/classmates).

Everyone (LDP, ISP, and PBL) have the same first 13 weeks of lab sciences keep in mind.

Ask any current LECOM student, and 90% will tell you that ISP is the way to go/they envy people in ISP. It's not "teaching yourself medicine" it's teaching yourself the material, as all students do anyways, and not being obligated to do any other quackery that goes along with traditional learning.

I still think I like the traditional method. But, this is why they offer three different pathways.

I'm a 2nd year LECOM and I would never want to do ISP! But I am also dyslexic and some days I feel barely literate. 😀 I would never be able to do the amount of reading they do, but that is why I'm LDP (lecture/discussion pathway). I would like more "discussion." You really have to be in touch with how you learn. If you are an auditory learner (I am) lecture might be good for you. If you get a lot out of reading a text book, you might want to do ISP or PBL because they have more time to read a text book.

There is PBL in Erie and FL, but I don't think they let people transfer. I have not known anyone to do it. It is a valid question. I don't think it would hurt to ask it at your interview.

Look at the interview feed back. They tend to ask the same small group of questions, so there is no reason that you can't work out a good thoughtful answer before you interview. Ask the interviewers about the pathways if you need to, but have a good idea about what pathway you want to be in when you interview because they will ask you to choose a pathway. When they accept you, 👍 you will be placed in that pathway. There is a possibility for a limited number of people to switch pathways, if the pathway they are in is not working out

Ask a med student at any other lecture-based med school how often they attend lecture by the end of first year.

ISP allows you to be like other med schools. Go to lecture if you want to, but you don't want to 90% of the time. And the ISPers don't have to attend lecture, unlike the LDPers. If ISP is so terrible, then howcome the waiting list at LECOM is so long for it by the end of first year?

You should definitely research the different learning pathways on lecom.edu, and be ready to make a choice. The interview is very relaxed. They first give you an introduction to Finacial Aid, and Living (renting, community life, etc), then you have an actual interview with a couple of faculty members. They ask very reasonable questions, such as why did you choice osteopathic medicine, or why LECOM. Also, concerning the learning pathways, I chose the ISP. I have been a grad. student working independently for the past 2-3 years, and I have alway worked best by teaching myself the material. I really don't need, or benefit from a professor reading a Power Point presentation to me. There is an ISP director that you work with, and the professors seem quite accessable if you have specific questions. People learn in many different ways, and LECOM gives you a choice, but be very confident in which pathway you chose, it is very important!! I dated a allopathic med. student for 2 years, she and many of her classmates would basically go to 1/2 or less of the classes. Repetition is the primary way people imbib the material, and commit it to memory. Good luck in your interview, and choose wisely!

Great to see someone else chose ISP! I'm not alone, lol.

I, like you, am a very independent learner. I feel every second I spent in an undergrad science lecture was a complete waste of time. I learn from review books/practice problems, etc. and prefer to structure my day the way I would like. Amen to profs just reading power points or just writing on the board. I made excellent use of my T-Mobile sidekick in order to surf the web and chat on AIM during college science lectures, lol. Hopefully ISP will work out well for both of us!

I also requested a deferral in order to finish my MS degree in counseling. I am hoping they will grant it to me-- when did you hear that they accepted your deferral request? I'm not expecting it until late April.

Congrats! When do you interview? They will ask you which pathway you prefer and be prepared to have a good explanation for your choice. Go with your strengths! Good luck!
