Took the DAT this morning.. and here's what I did.
default.htm
Lee_datscore.jpg

haven't seen anyone upload the actual unoffical score report, so here it is. lol

First of all, about my background. I graduated with a B.S. in Criminal Justice in Dec. 2007 in Texas. I moved to NYC after graduation to work for the NYPD. I enrolled in graduate to get master's in criminal justice. Then, a series of events led me to reconsider my career choice, and after a deep self evaluation, I chose to pursue dentistry. I dropped everything I was going, and completely changed direction. IMO, A cop and a dentist both help people and have a direct impact on people's lives. I realized my personality makes me a better doctor than a cop.

I volunteered at hospital clinics, and shadowed to ensure that this is what I want to do. I could definately picture myself being a competent and caring dentist.

The only prereqs I had to take were Organic I,II and Physicis II. I had taken basic sciences since I briefly considered majoring forensic science while undergrad.

I struggled to survive in NYC and supported myself working at restaurants and bars at night. I finished orgo II in July 2009. As soon as the grade was posted, I submitted AADSAS application. This was mid August.
The only thing the schools are waiting for is my DAT score.

I got a full time job offer with the federal government in August. I started the job, and at the same time, I started to study for DAT.
Due to the new job, I couldn't dedicate much time and energy to studying. I postponed twice.

So the materials I used:
-Bio: Very straightforward, was surprised. Nothing detailed. Understand the BIG PICTURE. My score is not that great for this section. Nonetheless, I decided to read Campbell's bio cover to cover, one chapter per day. Obviously, this did not work out. The most helpful resource for this section was this website: http://www.mhhe.com/biosci/esp/2001_gbio/default.htm#ok
This website will HELP you tremendously. This covers EVERY topic you need to know for the DAT. Every major concept is shown in diagrams and pictures, so you can visualize everything. THis website makes your studying very INTERACTIVE, with quizzes and tests that give you instant feedback! Kaplan and Cliffs are good, but they are explained in texts. This website makes you visualize everything.! You will save a lot of time. This webstie is much more effective than Cliffs. Please check it out.

-CHEM: Very straightforward, basic stuff. Watched Chad's video, took notes, and read them about 3 times. For my exam, EVERY topic you need to know was covered by his videos. I did Destroyer once, but repeated the problems I got wrong 2 times.
If you understand Chad's video and can do problem in destroyer, you should be good. I did not even look at Kaplan Blue book. Kaplan blue book made things more confusing for me.

-OCHEM: Again, fundamentals. DId not read Kaplan blue book. Fortunately, I finished my orgo sequence in the summer, so things were pretty fresh in my mind. DId destroyer once. Memorized the roadmaps.

-PAT: did 4 full length crack dat pat. First time I did pat, my score was 16, fourth time it was 18. I did not improve, since I had no time to review things I got wrong.

-Math: I used most of the time studying the sciences, and had no time to study for math. I just memorized formulas (surface area, volume), from Kaplan bb, did Destroyer problem once from 1-90. Did not have time.

-Reading: Nothing. I felt this section, you cannot prepare for. English is my second language. I came to the U.S. when I came to the U.S. at 14, I didn't know any English.

When I studied, I ate blueberries, as I heard they improve memory.
Night before the test, I couldn't sleep. Got 4 hours of zzzzz.
In the morning, ate rice, whole grilled salmon steak, blueberries, nuts, and cereal and milk. Before the test, ate 80% cacao dark chocolate. Chocolate keeps me sharp and alert.

Finaly words. This test is NOT hard. I mean I was a criminal justice major, took only bio I,II, Gen chem I, II, and orgo I, II. THAT"'s it. Contrary to what people bellieve, I don't think taking advance sciences will help you for the DAT. Look at the ADA guideline. Focus on the fundaments, and master them. If I can do it, all you science majors sure can.

Thanks for reading my long break down. Don't give up hope.
Btw, day before the test my topscore score was

17 bio
19 chem
21 o chem
20 math
18 pat
20 reading

dont be discouraged by your toscore score, and study smart. 🙂

Congrats on your achievements, very inspirational story of working and studying.
Your scores are great and you are good to go, i think your unique background is something that every dental school will love.
Good job and good luck from here on out.

Congrats on those great scores and thank you for the breakdown!! I was wondering how you apporoached the RC section? I am trying to improve my RC score but no luck so far. Thanks!!

Congratulations. I like those O Chem/G Chem scores. Sometimes, schools look at the overall depth and character of a person too. I dont work for the Feds but did endure a grueling summer as a fishery guy for the state, stewing in a God knows what infested filthy river with cow dung runoff going into the very stream I had to jump in every day, doing belly flops to get out of the damn thing at the end of the day because the mesquite trees arent worth a shiet in providing leverage, and then coming back to find that *****s have stolen most of the nets that you set the day before. Come to think of it, that whole damn river, aptly named Muddy River, was just a cesspool of sewage from the former dairy farm and coal burning plant out there. But hey, if the economy is bad and no one else is hiring...$10/hr isnt so bad. Hell yeah it is!!! After working in the heat in the 110+ heat, it's pretty exhausting to come home and then try to crack open a book. So, I can understand your time constraints. I've so far postponed my exam 2x as well. Next up is after Thanksgiving. Just thinking of screwing up gives me the willies. But my God man, reading Campbell's front to back???? I didnt even do that in school....let alone for the DAT. Major props to you for even doing it...nevermind the score. Good luck.

Did you use Chads O chem videos? I thought they were kind of redundant going over mechanisms too much....since the DAT really doesnt care they just want the product or reactant.

Good job w/ the scores and its very interesting that you worked for the NYPD.

the guy above me... i know who stole the nets....

Very nice scores 🙂

the only thing you should be prepared for is adcoms will ask you why dentistry and not medicine. Becuase you mentioned u've volunteered at hospitals. The only reason Im brining this up is because I've done the same thing, I've done close to a year and a half volunteering at hospitals and when I contact dental schools, they always tell me that adcoms will ask about this..... I don't think its a big deal, as matter of fact, I think it makes us more well rounded pre-dents, cause we've experienced other sides of the health care profession.

Good luck

THanks a lot guys! Last night, I finally slept in peace.
Until yesterday, I used to study on the subway on my way to work every morning, trying not to fall and breathe in the subway car packed with human. This morning, I didn't have to do that. I just listend to my Ipod and enjoyed the ride. It felt surreal. lol

Sorry that my writing wasn't clear, but I did not work for the NYPD. I came to new york hoping to get the job, but did not. I ended up working for the fed. govt though. I felt hopeless when i didnt get the NYPD job, but now I believe I'll be happier being a dentist. Being a cop was my dream since a kid, but I guess life is unpredictable, making it more fun.

Also, I did not read Campbell cover to cover. I gave up when I got to chapter 30 something... I used the website I posted and it helped me more than campbell.

Blamb,
For RC, I think it's important to get a a feel for how the passage is structured, and how it flows. This you can sort of know my reading first sentence of each paragraph. The main idea of a pragraph is usually expressed in the first sentence. FOr me, reading the first sentence gave me an idea of the content for rest of the pragraph. This way, you can get a feel for how the entire passage is organized.

Then I would quickly jot down the keywords for each paragraph.

Usually, one passage contains 12 paragraphs. SO I would make a small table with main idea and keywords. For example, let's say the passage is about Bacteria. Make the table during your break (number 1-3 on your laminated sheet). Quickly scan the passage and fill in the information as follows:
Example:
Paragraph
1 intro, def. of bacteria; cell wall, prokaryote,, etc

2 diseases caused by bac; e.pylori infection, gastroritis,,etc

3 symptoms: vomit, fever, hives,, etc

4 how to detect? : x-ray, gamma ray, etc.

5 treatments avaiable: antiotics, excercise, Infrared Therapeutic Machine (ICM)

and continue paragraph 12.

If you understand how it is structured and have a better idea where a particular topic would more likely be found.

So if the question asks, "the symptoms of gastroitist are?", then you would look at paragraph 3.

If the question asks Infrared Therapetuic Machine (ICM) is based on..." then you would look at paragraph 5.

Most important thing is maintaining your cool. I finished all 50 questions 3 seconds before time expired using this method.

Sorry I am not good at explaining, but hope this helps you.!

Yes, I am ready answer "why dentistry?" question.. lol
By volunteering at hospitals, i meant i volunteered at a dental clinic at a hospital.. hospital dentistry..

i first volunteered at a private practice, then wanted to know how it would be different being a dentist at a hospital..

In the morning, ate rice, whole grilled salmon steak, blueberries, nuts, and cereal and milk. Before the test, ate 80% cacao dark chocolate. Chocolate keeps me sharp and alert.

🙂

Great scores man, Just wondering if you had had to lay some cable after that breakfast? I know my G.I. system would have been working overtime:scared:

on a serious note, your website seems pretty sweet! For some reason when i clicked the link, the page pulled up and wouldnt allow me to click on? so I searched around with the URL and found the online quizzes. however, i couldnt find the animations. Did you have to pay for this service?

lol fish gets digested slowly, and its not hard on your system. i was fine.

the website. you click the link, when it comes up, on the TOP LEFT HAND CORNER, you see "click here to choose unit". That's how you navigate around the website. Compare the website with the ADA guideline, and you will see it has everything you need to know. By the way, this website is made my McGraw Hill company, which is one of the two books the ADA lists as reference books for bio. The other one is Campbell. So I would say it's a good source of info.

Thank you for taking the time to respond!! I have actually practiced with that method (Kaplan uses this approach) but I have been running out of time on my third passage. I guess I will continue practicing it.

Congratulations! I agree, very inspirational story and definitely an awesome topic for your personal statement, I admire your dedication! Good luck and keep us posted with what happens!

I was just wondering if you could help me navigate this site. The sit is still up, but I don't know if it is active. I have clicked on the click here to choose a unit and the site doesn't do anything. Thanks in advance.

http://www.mhhe.com/biosci/esp/2001_gbio/requirements/default.htm

Just ran it again, and i realized it wasnt working because i was using firefox, try using internet explorer and it should work good. Thanks for the site, and congrats on the good scores 🙂
