Since I already have a full time job I figured that I could try the volunteering route to get some pharmacy experience. I contacted a couple of free clinics in my area that I know have a pharmacist on staff at least part of the time. These work out great because they are usually at night, I will learn a lot hands on, I will make some contacts with pharmacists in my area, and I will be helping a lot of people that really need it.

So far I have gotten the OK from one clinic that is every saturday morning from 9 to noon and another that is on Mondays.

So anybody out there looking for a place to volunteer or shadow you might want to try something similar, usually tney are more than pleased to have your help. 😀

That's cool. You'll make some good friends at thos places too... 🙂

Yay! Good job, way to be persistent! 😀

Thanks. That's good advice. I've been looking for a place to work part-time or volunteer to gain experience and meet people. Now I'll try the free and "sliding scale" clinics.

Are the sliding scale clinics the same as county clinics, city clinics and county hospitals?

I called them sliding scale clinics because they charge a fee based on a sliding scale. Here, they are actually called Chicago Dept. of Public Health Clinics. They are different from county hospitals. I'm not sure if we should call them county clinics or city clinics.

good idea !

Some hospitals, such as UCSF, have a volunteer department. You have to submit an application, attend an orientation, immunizations, etc. through them. Then they will place you in a department (I chose pharmacy, of course), but there are so many cool positions to choose from (nursing floors, book/video cart, "cuddlers").

Inquire at your local hospitals and plan on applying ASAP. The whole orientation process/getting all my shots up-to-date took about 3 months. 😱

Good luck to you all still looking for experience. Persistence is key.

I'm picking up a shift or two as a volunteer in UNC hospitals this semester, in the pharmacy. What I'd really like to do is volunteer in a compounding pharmacy. Since we do almost no compounding in our retail pharmacy, it's like a great mystery to me, and I'd love to explore it. Hopefully having passed the PTCE will help me out in that department.

I would have loved to volunteer at a hospital, but when I called just about every hospital in the OKC area none of them allowed volunteers in the pharmacy area. Crazy hu? In fact only one hospital even thought it was a good idea to impliment something like that for students. Blegh...most of them require that all volunteers submit to a background check anyway, so I dont see what the problem is.
