I've finally made it!

After going through some time to become a volunteer at a local elementary school, I've finally got an e-mail today saying I am now officially their new volunteer. They'll give me a badge tomorrow.

This is a tremendous honor.
I don't know why, I'm really happy that I've became a volunteer.
I've been worried sick about volunteering, and this e-mail almost made me cry.

I've been thinking about doing a volunteer at another place too, after confirming my schedule with the school.
Next stop is a center that helps people with blindness or vision problems.

It feels like I'm one step closer to my dream of helping people!!

LETS GO!!!!!!!

Are you excited because you never thought you would find somewhere to volunteer for your medical school app? Or are you excited because you really enjoy volunteering..

I've never thought about that. It's both, I'm happy that I finally got an e-mail back from somewhere after looking for it (literally went everywhere- schools, nearby places, clinics, hospitals etc.). I'm happy that I can be part of many helping hand.
Dang being a pre-med really desensitizes you to small victories
Yeah, I guess so. I've been really worried last few days. I might have needed an affirmation.

Hey don't listen to the haters. Every little thing that can go the right direction should be taken as a win. Volunteering is a good step toward solidifying your DO app (even if you don't have a "sincere desire" to do it like some people claim you have to have). Have fun with it.

Thanks. I think I'm like both: I'm volunteering to make my EC strong and at the same time, spend time doing something important and good.
Thing is, I jumped into action today, spending 8:30 AM to 3:05 PM working with a teacher. Today, I worked with children 1 on 1 to start their writing. I had a little desk as a writing workshop. From what I understand, these children require extra help (thus they aren't taking this writing work as a hw).
It was exciting. And being a part of this made me realize how hard it is to be a teacher.
Now I get to imagine how hard it must be for Physicians as well. Had time to gauge my life choices too.

I honestly thought you were trying to be sarcastic. Congrats though I hope you enjoy it. Keep us updated with the new fads with kids
New fads with kids: remember how classes had computers? It's being replaces with iPads. Literally. No computers; just iPads. It saves space and it is easy to distribute. It's not a fad, but it tells us something about new generation: kids/children are more familiar with smartphones and tablets than PCs.

Your comment about being one step closer to helping people
Is absolutely true; anything that looks good on your app/CV will help. Congratulations and good luck to you!

Thanks!! I feel like I'm closer every time.
I will keep this volunteer opportunity until I can no longer physically go there (move to different location, etc.).

I'm going to worry about clinical experience starting next year 🙂

Argh, this became a such click-bait post that I felt so compelled to change the title.
But I realized I can't. I mean, it wasn't meant to be that way.
