Finally, the Public Can Stop Claiming We Are Over-paid

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes, idk why WVU complains. That's actually pretty cheap at $122/sqft. Where I live right now, house goes for $350+/sqft... so double that price and more -.-;

I dunno, I seem to have completely opposite values to most of you guys... If you are the ultra-competitive type and you want to make loads more money than everyone else, forget pharmacy, go to med school.

Personally, I don't care for competing anymore. Competing to get into school, for a residency in a high paying specialty, for a job, for promotions, for more business, etc.

To me, the value of pharmacy is that we can do 5-8 years of school, graduate in our mid-twenties, hopefully with not too much debt, and bam, go straight into a six-figure job. No more competing! Just relax! Does anyone else feel this way?

To the people debating how much we should get paid, there are huge flaws when you base pay on how much you spend, especially if you have an OVERSPENDING problem. Try thinking about pay and spending independently of each other. Otherwise you will have a very dangerous vicious cycle going on.

I only have $5000 now and it has to last me till Jan

I feel so poor..
Don't feel bad, I have less than that, and I don't get a financial aid refund. In fact, I owe about $300/semester now since our tuition and aid got divided into 3, rather than 2, and overall cost of attendance went up a bit.

Although I still have some income since I'm working, so maybe I'm in better shape overall. Still, with rotations I'm not sure how much or how little I'll be able to work. My last 2 were fairly flexible with the scheduling so I could work more, but I have a few coming up that are probably not going to be, leaving me to working a few weekend hours at most.

How much is your rent? You basically have $1000/month to live on, assuming your aid will come mid-January, which is 5 months away.

I actually have more like $4700 now....and I am going to the beach next week...so more like $4500 after that!

That $4500 has to last till Jan when I get my Fin Aid. 🙄

I am talking to someone that is going to rent me a room and a private bathroom for $500 a month. I am also looking at a room for $425 a month and a room for $350 a month...but these rooms require you to share a bathroom....I really PREFER NOT sharing a bathroom with anyone...but with only $4500 and NO MONEY coming in till Jan....I might have to share a bathroom. All these rents include everything too...so it's $500 total utilities and everything included...but still...it's going to be tight.

This is the first time I am so worried about money!!!! Before this I never had to pay rent before! LOL....Now, I have to pay everything on my own...except cellphone and car insurance my mother still paid for that...but everything else is on me. This sucks so bad...if I had $10,000 then it would be doable...but $4500 is very tight from now till Jan.

THIS SUCKS SO BAD.

Welcome to real life I guess. LOL

Anyone want to buy a Herve Leger dress? I could use the extra money.

In Milwaukee, you can find houses in the "fancy" suburbs for $300k. Since you live near the lake, you don't have to use air conditioning as much. The homes right on the lakeshore are still very expensive.

and it's build in 1907 dude! That's before the first world war. Holy schnikes! 😱
Yeah, lots of gigantic old houses in that neighborhood. Most of them have been chopped up into like 4-6 apartments, unfortunately, but it's a cool place to live. Finding one that's still a one family is awesome.

Spending in general makes sense, but spending on tuition, living expenses, years of not working full time, etc needs to be considered in my opinion. Pharmacists make more money than their techs who outwardly seem to be doing at least a similar job, because in reality the pharmacists have spent way more time in school and money to get where they are, plus all of the responsibility is riding on their license, and they provide an extremely valuable service (health care). If the cost of education wasn't spiraling higher and higher, even at public schools, then I might concede and say that the pay could stand to be lower, but not by an extreme amount.

Damn...and to think I have been paying for everything since I was 16...(Well parents covered rent while I was in HS)

Always a good idea to teach kids the value of money and to respect the amount of work that goes into earning money.

Is that even legal to live by yourself when you're 16? I feel like you have to have a guardian until you're 18 or something like that. I can't imagine you ate very well, either.

I lived at home...I meant that I did not have to pay rent while I was in HS, as I was at home still. I should have worded that differently.

Though most days went, get up and go to school. Get out of school early thanks to the work study program (skipped an hour of school thanks to that). Then go work until about 10:30 and go home. On the plus side, when I had nights off, I had money to burn, thus I bought myself what I wanted. I typically worked 4-5 days a week.

I actually ate pretty well. I worked at Outback Steakhouse and got food for half price. I worked about 30ish hours per week until I graduated HS. Then I got a fulltime job at the local hospital in the cafeteria until I was able to transfer into the pharmacy. (They considered in-house transfers before outside apps, so I was able to get in pretty easy.) Definitely teaches you somethings about life, as I worked with mostly older people (30+) in the cafeteria. Made damn sure I did something with my life. I could not fathom being 30+ doing a job that I thought was low class at 18, but that is life for some people.

Now I do fulltime nightshift in the pharmacy + fulltime school til I get into pharm. school. Then it will be whatever internships + prob staying prn here. Gotta keep the hospital connection, as that could be a lifesaver when I graduate, assuming that there will be no jobs at that point.

I wish I could move home & live for $122/sqft as well... If I ever go home I'll probably live with my mother just to pay off my loans as fast as humanly possible. Right now the average price per sq foot is ~$371, which is a steal compared to 2005-2006 when it topped out at $660... :scared:

I'm not. I live in freaking Montgomery County, PA. The house I bought for the same price is nice and all, but god damn that house is sweet for $265k. Like I said, depressing...

God, eat a hamburger.

Sizes 6-12 is what y'all need to shoot for.

LOL...don't worry. I drink Starbucks on a regular basis and those things are like 1000 calories per drink and I LOVE chocolate....so I'll be a size 12 in no time. 😱

Drink coffee black, or with Splenda. Goodbye calories. Sorry about the chocolate.

I wish I was GOOD and drink black coffee.

1) it's much cheaper
2) it's much less calories

I drink Java chip frap, caramel frap and white mocha frap....MUCH more expensive and 100X the calories. 🙁

That's how it is here in Atlanta... it's supposed to be one of the worst markets in the US. You can get a huge house within 20-30 minutes of the largest city in the SE.

Um... not if you're barely over 5". My mom wears a size 2 & the doctor told her she's barely within her healthy weight... I'm sure someone as smart as you knows that throwing out a strict set of numbers won't universally apply to everyone.

Starbucks isn't that bad... a tall caramel frappuccino WITH whipped cream is 300 calories... but you can get a grande caramel frappuccino without whipped cream & skim milk for 250 calories.

Just order it "light'... my home store is right next to a Starbucks in the same shopping center so I always walk there during lunch. If it's busy and I'm not eating much else I will get the regular frappuccino just to have some extra fat & calories, but if I'm also going across the street for french fries & a cheeseburger I will get the light one.
