Here's my story....

I have a horrid UG GPA, low low low, and I applied late (feb) as a biology Undergrad senior 3 cycles ago, guess what, my 17DAT didn't do it for them, and I got rejected.
Thinking I was a late applicant, I didn't do anything for the next year...just a bit of shadowing and a worthless job, and I reapplied early and got rejected. After becoming a little more realistic and speaking with admissions directors, they referred me to graduate school as the only way to get a fresh start.

Guess what, even graduate schools didn't want a piece of me because of my UG GPA. So I enrolled as a non matriculated student. I even went as far as exceeding the amount of allowed credits (12) as a non matric (automated registration system didn't catch me 😀 ) and completed 18 credits/ 6 couses in PhD level biology. All A's and B's. I retook the DAT, got a 20AA, and got a teaching job with a well known test prep company.

I decided to see if my year of effort paid off by applying to matriculate and lo and behold, I just found out I have been accepted as a degree seeking student. They even took my DAT scores in lieu of GRE's....which the have NEVER done before from what I understand. I'll be finishing up on the MS requirements this semester and a comprehensive written is all that will remain for the spring. And so it stands, I've applied to 12 dental schools this cycle (mailed aug 9th) and ~12 more being sent as soon as I get the money to do so next week.

I haven't gotten interviews yet but I'm hoping one or 2 will see my recent progress and give me a chance to meet me in person. My motivation to become a dentist, until recently was branded as unrealistic mostly due to my poor UG academics, however, I'm taking it one step at a time and I'm actually enjoying the challenge...

basically, keep on chugging, I have the support of my family (most of the time)..they nag a lot but I know they want to best for me...and if you want it bad enough...like I do, It will hopefully come.....

Keep on chugging. Great motto. I am a firm believer that effort is paid back with interest. So go get 'em and let us know how things turn out!

Your sustained effort is indeed commendable! I know so many people who have had similar experiences in applying to dental school, medical school and law school. Yes, it would be great to be accepted the first time around, but really - how much sweeter is victory after you've fallen a couple of times in your reach for it! Best of luck to you in your apps! :luck:

what got you interested in dentistry?...

oh wow....such a broad question...haha...

bunch of stuff

NOT my childhood dentist (he was terrible)
-Dentistry as a science and art
-Autonomy
-Ethics of good dentistry
-Potential for mission/ aid/ relief work
-Office/family balance/ hours
-The lifestyle/compensation...(not a primary reason but we all gotta put food on the table at the end of the day rite?)
and much more...

guess you'll have to be my interviewer to know em all........

Ruth, I love your post. I have a similar situation, and I'm rooting for you. I am finishing undergrad right now and I have a very poor gpa. But it is one step at a time and I am enjoying it as well.

Great post and good luck
