This question is for students with families. Did you have to receive private student loans to help to support your family during school, or are you able to rely solely upon federal loans? Also, does anyone work to supplement income. I notice that all the projected budgets are for a single student. I have a wife and one child and was wondering if anyone had any input on this subject. Thank you and any info would be much appreciated

I was wondering about this too. I'm not married and dont have kids. I plan on getting married my 2nd or 3rd year. I want to have kids younger rather than older. I was reading in another forum on SDN (one for spouses) and they were saying they are on welfare and WIC. I'll have my husband's income cuz he'll def have a job! haha. But that still scared me hearing med students and such on welfare.

He he he! my parents are also pressuring me to tie the knot in 2-3 yrs with someone whom i have not even met:laugh: (wat can i say, iam an indian). But iam in no mood for any marriage or commitment. i dont know i think it will be very hard to manage both education and then family. I think it will be good if married like during residency or even after residency. But see here's the thing, iam just 21, so i think i cud wait for 5-6 yrs more. i dont know abt others here.

Many spouses work. That supplements the income. If you have children and a spouse is staying home, WIC and welfare are great options.

Can you really get welfare while in school?

but do you know anything about the loans, do the federal ones cover most of your school and living costs? I would like to take out little, if none, because the interest rates are so much higher.

Yep, your income must be less that $1300 a month for a family of 3 to qualify.

Loans are limited. The budget is for the student only so if you trying to live off it, it can be a major stretch. There is no give w/ the federal loans either. You can get personal loans but you will need to have good credit and may need to start paying right away.

iam just curious, plzz pardon my ignorance or stupid language. this is only for those who havent got married yet, why do u guys wanna get married in the middle of ur most important education. unless u have a constant income source or ur spouse is ready to work and contribute her income. Taking these many loans to survive will be a suicide. so much interest will be building up on heads and i dont think we need more tension apart from studying and clinical rotations. and god forbid u miss a payment, ur whole credit history will be ruined.

There was this website about Podiatry which said the first and most important step for success after graduation is to graduate with as low loans as possible. I dont think getting accumulated with heavy loans is a good idea as in beginning years we dont know how much v r gonna earn and if a huge chunk goes in loan it will be very bad.

ofcourse if u r already married, then its a different thing. You are already married with Kids and settled in life. But for a new person, i think one cud wait for 4 yrs more.

It depends on what you want out of life. Family has always been important in my life so I chose to have a family. I don't think that the two things mutually exclusive. Many successful pods had families during school.

Well, I want to get married because, I don't think education is more important than family. I want kids before I'm 30 because of not only medical reasons, but also because I want to be able to do things with my kids. My parents were young when they had me and my brothers, and this past summer they hiked the Grand Canyon with us and year before hiked up a mountain to a glacier. I want to do that with my kids. My boyfriend will have a job, and we dont want to get married until he has a steady income (hence waiting another year, two, or three). Our parents are both great and live close to each other which is nice. Only thing that I believe will be a problem is the first 6 weeks after having a child. Most daycares wont take them until 6 weeks, so that is my main worry. But I don't plan on having a child until residency more than likely.

I agree. I have a wife too and a child coming in april. I'm excited. I think a family can help though in ways of moral support for your success in school. SUre money is tight, but you can't afford to fail when others are depending on you and you want to give them the best life.

Good show. Anyhow I have a great wife! 2 kids(that I know of😕 )jk.
Anyhow. I really think it will be great having a small family while in pod school...as stated by bdaddyjolley-moral support, posible alternative income, my wife loves studying with me(she is the smart one-she just wants to stay home with the girls) and next my wife is HOT-I got lucky:luck:
Also WIC is a great program to help maintain healthy life styles in what is sometimes a difficult finanacial time for MANY couples. Some people prefer not to use it(my family) but it is not pride but rather that we don't need it-yet. My brother in law helps board the Idaho WIC program and is a dairy farmer. Medicaid/Welfare-believe if you pay taxes as a successful pod you'll pay your debt to society back ten fold. $$$ isn't life. many of us have quit high paying jobs to pursue PODIATRY.

You might be suprised there are a lot of cold nights between you and residency.

Ive got a wife, two kids and one on the way. Its all about priorities. For some family is first, for others it may be different. But I can tell you that the support that I have recieved from my wife these past 2+ years have been a keystone in the success of my education. I cannot imagine having to go through school being single. We only take out federal loans and I wont lie to you, money can be tight. But you can live on any budget as long as you, well...budget.

i have spoken with many students in dental, med, etc.. with wife and kids...almost all of them are on at least medicaid, many are on WIC, and some even do the section 8 housing thing. i totally agree that while we are in school with little or no income, why not take advantage of the programs fro which we qualify?? even if you are proud, i dare say that if money is tight, your priorities change from comfort to survival. many of us have been paying oodles of dough into the state medicaid fund thus far...if i can qualify, you better believe i want to get some of that back!!!😀
