Hi guys,

It isn't new years here yet but for those of you who are ahead: Happy New Year!!!.

I was just wondering about the financial aid application (FAFSA): I will most likely not receive any financial help from my parents for tuition during dental school and was thinking of applying as an "independent student" . However I heard that for some really good loans and even grants parental information is required regardless of whether I receive financial support from my parents or not. Could you guys (especially those of you already in dental school) give me any feedback on this?

Thank You,
JJ

There is a loan called the "Dental Health Professions Loan." It's some sort of government loan. Of my group of friends, not all of us receive it. I'm pretty sure its based on parental income listed on the FAFSA b/c none of us file FAFSA as "independent." As a recipient of the loan, it's a really good deal. The amount you can borrow goes up each year in dental school and the best part - the money is subsidized & no interest on it accrues till after I graduate, just like the "Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans" that everyone is eligible for. First year - $4500, Second year - $6000, Third year - $7000, and Fourth year - $8000. That's a lot of subsidized loan money, so if you think you might qualify for it, apply under your parent's income rather than independent.

Maybe that'll help you.
