Hi all. I have a friend who came here from Asia for undergrad and then grad school and now is on a work visa. She's thinking about perhaps trying for med school but is worried about being ineligible for grants or loans and needing to negotiate lending rates with private institutions.

Does anyone know if there's any way for non US-citizens/residents to receive aid? When she asked me, I had no clue, but I bet some helpful person in SDN land knows...

Thanks!

Well, first off, you can tell her that she will not be eligible for any kind of federal aid (including all those Perkins, Stafford loans, etc). If she will go to a private school, it will be up to them what kind of aid will give her, and it will mainly be merit scholarships, or some kind of scholarships; however let her know that unless she is a completely steller student (3.9-4.0 GPA, 40s MCAT), then those scholarships will not be that much. I manged to get into UTSW, and the great thing about Texas schools, is that although they have a very competitive out-of-state admittance policy, once you are accepted, they will give you a $1000 scholarship, which in turn will drop your tuition rate to in-state tuition. International students are viewed as out-of-staters.
So no matter what, she will need to come up with some money. For international students, there are several corporations that will lend money, as long as you have a US citizen, or permanent resident with good credit-history, and solid income co-signing the loan. I used TERI - www.teri.org, for my loans, and they have pretty decent interest rates.
That said, she needs to know that internationals get in very hard in medschool to start with. I had a 3.98 GPA, 33MCAT, 4 yrs of ER/EMS experience, and taught KAPLAN; I applied to 24 schools, got 3 interviews (declined 1 of them - too far away), and got accepted into UTSW, and wait-listed for Emory.
Anyways, hope that helps.
