Here is my situation:
Accepted to 2 schools, one is a 4 yr traditional private MD, the other is a 5 yr private MD research program.
The 4 yr program is offering me no aid.
The 5 yr program is offering me 4k/yr in institutional grants. This program is known to be very generous in offering aid. The 5 yr program also pays about 30k in research stipends.
When you factor in lost residency earnings potential for year 5 (assuming appox 40-45k/yr), by attending the 5 year program instead of the 4, it's basically a wash.
I really want to go to the 5 yr program, but I can't justify the 5th year without some financial incentive. Do I have any bargaining leverage? Is it worth appealing my financial aid package to the 5 yr program?
BTW, both programs cost the same annually. For the 5 yr program, you only pay for 4 years.
Just to let you know, my parents are successful professionals making over 6 figures so need-based aid is out of the question.
Thanks 🙂
