Can anyone with experience describe FAFSA? What are the deadlines? How long does the process take from filing to recieving? Do I have to clear up any bad citations on my credit report, and how do I do that? I've been putting it off but now feel I will get off the waitlist this year. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try these sites, one is just general info, the other is the real thing, you can either download the program or complete it on the web. WEB BASED IS MUCH FASTER!!!

Have copies of your tax forms and your parents federal taxes in front of you when trying to complete it.

info web page

FAFSA entrance page

It does take some time. Most schools suggested that you had a month to complete your paperwork after being accepted.

PS congrats about getting off a waitlist!!!

hi nyer,

pcl is right...the web based FAFSA is fast and easy. The website is: www.fafsa.ed.org. make sure that you are filling out the 2001-2002 form.

you will need at least your own taxes, and it never hurts to give your parents' info if you can get it.

make sure to list all of the schools that you would like the form sent to, as going back later wastes time. the form is sent electronically, and the school will download it if they need it...you don't really have to worry about the information floating around the FAO.

Make sure to print the signature page, sign it and mail it in as quickly as you can. Print a confirmation copy of the form for yourself.

Also, you might take the bull by the horns, since it is July, and send in a xerox copy of your W-2 forms and tax forms, to save time in case you are selected for verification. About 3 in 10 FAFSAs are selected, so it always seems like when fewer forms are being processed, more are selected.

Also, most medical schools do need to run a credit check on applicants to make sure that they can, in fact, get the financial aid they need to attend school. If you have anything to "clean up," take advantage of the processing time for your FAFSA to do that. This is also a good time to consolidate any debt that you can to lower interest rate credit cards, and begin to get as many things paid off as possible.

Good luck..if you have questions, you can send me a message...click on the envelope above right.
