Does anyone know if a student can borrow above the tuition amount to help cover living expenses?

yes each school makes up a student budget which includes tuition, fees, and estimated reasonable living expenses for the area. you can borrow up to this amount in student loans. usually you can find an example of this budget on each school's website.

edit - i just noticed you mentioned that you have a family - living expenses above and beyond yourself are not covered in the educational budget, so if you will need to borrow extra to support your family and things like a car and a house, you have to take out regular loans for that.

Thanks for the info, Biogurl.

My wife will definitely be working full time. Plus, the company she's going back to carries health insurance for the entire family at no extra cost to the employee.
