Financial projections of dental school Excel document

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You sir are great, I finally figured out how to use this and the projections are pretty scary. Still though its much better than my rough approximations method of saying "its gonna be expensive".

Thanks for taking the time to do this.

Was it hard to figure out? I can try and update it with some better instructions if need be. 🙂

Nah not at all hard to figure out, just being my usual self and refusing to follow instructions 🙂.

Translation: Downloaded it a couple days back, didn't have time to actually do anything on it till today.

I figured you were being honest, hence why I said thanks! So thanks again!! 😀 I'm not too sure why SexyMariGal jumped on it though... Maybe the paypal thing? haha

The worst thing about posting in the internet is sometimes you can't tell if someone's being sarcastic or not lol.

Ok, cool. 🙂

Very true! haha

That's a sexy spreadsheet

also provides much needed mental va
lidation at this point.
va
lidation in that 😱 its expensive but acceptable.
it's also
easy to digest when counter-weighted with the fact that
being a dentist is a sweet gig & a lovable profession.

thank you for taking the initiative to share this with us.

Now I need an excel that explains how you made the last excel.

This is amazing, Bereno. Thanks so much!

Boreno you are the man! Hope school at UConn is going well. This spreadsheet is definitely useful. thanks

Super small update to the file. My GF wanted to give this to her friends and family, so made it less dental school specific (changing "dental" to "graduate"). Functionally its the same, so sorry if I got your hopes up lol

This is awesome!

I wonder though, if there is a way to figure in spouse's income and income increases as well?

I just added my husband's income to my starting salary and went from there, but I'm not sure if it's as accurate.

Are you referring to the six month grace period? I have heard of people getting early jobs, and stacking every dime away for this six months before they are required to start paying. The intent of this is to allow you to develop a small "emergency" fund. This emergency fund would be there to compensate for any large "emergency" payments that might arise. This would in no way reduce your monthly cash outflows though, which are the real killer for most. This is more of a precautionary policy than a financial one.

BTW, 0.02 cents is a lot different than $0.02. I know you know this, but I thought it was funny. lol 😀

This video is hilarious. It's like when my PI got so frustrated when trying to teach me how to make antibiotic dilutions on a 96-well-plate. I was dumbfounded at first but once I understood it, I couldn't believe how long it took to understand something so simple.

I would just add it to yours and estimate the combined increase in cash yearly income. This is only meant as a high level document. Not much precision in this lol. 🙂

lol, they always end up being good laughing moments

@ Bereno, I just want to say that I love your avatar  (obviously look at my username)

Absolutely amazing in the presentation Bereno.

Is there a way to modify the increments of the "debt" numbers? To get more specific rather than increments of 5k?

Thanks!

I'm in class most of today, but I will see what I can do 🙂

Modified for you. Let me know what you think 👍

This doc is brilliant. Hat's off, Bereno.

You rock man.👍

So I take it that this works for you? lol 😀

Just a reminder to everyone: PLEASE let me know if there are any suggestions that you can think of. I want this to be a valuable tool for those predents/premeds/preanythings to use so that they can make an education decision about their professional future. 👍

Do you think you'll update the file after we go over the fiscal cliff and all the tax rates change (increase)?

🙄

Hi Bereno,

I appreciate your work on what appears to be a fantastic tool, however, when I try to download and open the zip file it says that it is corrupted. I tried it from another PC with the same result. Would you be able to repost the file?

Thx

I just tested it and it seems to work... Not sure why it was not working for you. You have an updated version of excel?

It worked for me too. This was an excellent document. Thank you for putting it together! It gave me a pretty clear indicator of my financials after school. 👍

awesome!!! thanks for doing this, its confusing to have to figure this all out on our own, thank you man!

Aren't the interest rates in the document outdated, per http://www.direct.ed.gov/calc.html ? Seems like interest rates have fallen 1-1.5% with the new bill from last summer.

The interest rates are entered by those using the document, so this is still a totally functioning document. If you are referring to the pre-set interest rates, then yes those are old, but as said earlier, they are meant to be changed/entered by the user. Hope that clears things up.

There's more than just the debt, everything is factored into this. For instance, buying a practice, anticipated salary your first year along with expected increase in salary annually, expenses, mortgage, age, there's a lot and the OP did a great job to make it as realistic as possible.

Real eye opener. Every school should include a spread sheet and a monthly payment number an accumulated interest.

I'm trying to add the mortgage and practice amounts though and it says theres a password?

Were you able to figure out how to enter in mortgage and practice loan amounts? I just saw this, so sorry its a bit late.

I had to work through the terminal, but It would be greatly appreciated to have one without a password!

And no worries, you're a busy student!

If your discretionary income is negative, does the excel file take into account that you will not be able to make the loan payment for that month, which accrues more interest? or does it just tell you it's negative and assume it is paid off when moving on to the following months/years?
