Find Out About New Residencies

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I've heard about certain residency programs that are suppose to start in the near future...how can I go about finding out more information about them? Should I contact the administration at that specific hospital?
I went on the ACGME website and noticed that they have a link for 2009-10 Newly Accredited Programs, but they don't have any info under it yet...does anyone know when they update it?
I would like to find out so that I can plan out my rotations accordingly, ie if a new programs starts for 2011-12 then I can do my audition there in fall of 2011 so that I can be part of their program in 2012.

I'm wondering why a pre-med would be asking this? Or are you a medical student who hasn't changed their status?

At any rate, regardless of your status, why the interest in new programs? There are hundreds of programs out there - why go with a brand new one? That isn't to mean that all new programs aren't worthwhile but why are you specifically targeting them?

And if you aren't going to be applying for residency for 2 more years, how do you even know what you want to do (assuming you haven't done any clinical rotations yet)?

...And no, I'm not on rotations yet, but I still have a pretty good idea about what I want to go into...

Keep an open mind. MOST med students will change their mind at least once during med school. Even most of the people who "have a pretty good idea" going into the clinical years. You will see on rotations that many things aren't what you imagined. Things you thought you'd love, you hate, and things you thought you'd hate, actually don't seem so bad by comparison. Which is why a lot of fourth years will express frustrations that residency applications have to happen so early, before they can see all the specialties. Because until you spend some time working in one, even as a med student, you don't really know if it's for you. So I would go into the clinical years realizing that you haven't really seen enough (either of the field you think you'll like, or the fields you think you won't) to know what you are going into, and keep your eyes open.

I agree that there is no real value in researching new residency programs at this stage. Late in 3rd year or early in 4th year, you need to be checking out these places on the ACGME website and Frieda and most importantly talking to mentors in the field. You can pick partly based on location, but you wouldn't want to put yourself into an unknown or malignant place in a specialty that may not be ideal for you just to be able to walk to work.

Oh you got time. If they're newly accredited for 09-10, that means they *should* be up and running, but sometimes because of late-accreditation, they miss the match. So at the very least, they'll be up in 10-11. If you're looking to join for 12-13, you've got 2 years or so to collect info.

ACGME should post who the program director is and there should also be a site where it lists the program coordinator. Just email them, say that you're an MS1/MS2 or whatever, that you saw they were approved, and wanted to know more info for possibly 12-13. Tell them you're from the area, etc., and just wanted to know how the program is coming along. They will probably express excitement that you're interested, trade contact info, and give you a reasonable timeframe to call back and arrange a rotation.

Look on your own school's deadline to request away rotations. No big deal. It's early.

The only source of information will be the program themselves. The ACGME will only list it when they are actually approved, and will tell you nothing more that that. Timelines have a way of slipping, so no matter what they say there is no guarantee that the program will open when you need it to be.
