Does anyone have any experience with finding jobs in a hospital (clinical) as an undergraduate? I searched online and I couldn't find any info. Do they simply not hire those? Too much responsibility for undergrad? Also does medical records (filing and stuff in medical records department) count as clinical experience?

I know cornell has a few undergrads...I think Columbia as well...in the ED doing filing or some scribe stuff. I just remember seeing them when I used to bring patients as an EMT.

However, you are going to find it to be VERY hard to find undergrad experience in these places unless you have someone on the inside.

They are just simply too busy to accommodate people asking to do anything hands on. They will probably give you some candy-striper job through the volunteering dept...if that even exists. It probably doesn't at places like Monte, Jacobi, Bronx Leb, anything in Queens, Brooklyn, and most manhattan hospitals. The nicer hospitals probably have some volunteering office. The nasty ones don't really care/have use for anyone who doesn't speak another language. If you DO speak spanish/chinese/korean then you probably may be able to find something. I know we are hard pressed to find people like that sometimes.

I would try community hospitals outside NYC...why the attraction to NYC? Do you live there?

The issue is that you likely need at least some sort of certification to have a direct patient care position. It also helps to know someone in the hospital who can aid your search. Networking is very important in this instance.

You could also go the CNA or EMT route. The time investment is not small, however, and to be employed, you will have to prove your worth. People is these professions are not necessarily friendly to those they perceive as incompetent resume padders, especially in EMS.

Good luck on your search. Get ready to start selling yourself, doing lots of leg-work/phone calls.

it is close to impossible to find a paid EMT gig in NYC with only the certification no experience

It can be difficult. NYC has its own protocol for certain things, so FDNY EMS trains you themselves, regardless of whether or not you have an EMT cert. I know they teach you NYC protocol in addition to their EMT course for NYS. I don't know if other agencies require a protocol update if you have an EMT from elsewhere in NYS.

Im not sure what the story is with OLM (or whatever it is called now) or St. Vinny's or any of the other hospitals across NYC with their own units. But like Skin said, you probably need at least 1 year of experience in a 911 system. You may be able to pull a job with Transcare or something, but I doubt it with no experience.

I know for a FACT it is VERY hard to get a job with cornell.

Besides, none of these agencies hire for the summer...so if you want to get hired, you better be around for the whole year. EMT's are desperately needed across NYC.

I worked at Cornell...
