I'm sure something like this has been addressed before but:
I'm training for EMT-B right now, and I loved the clinical experience in the ER.
Unfortunately, they limit you to 24 hours of experience in the ER- you don't get any more than that.
I called the hospital, and they said they aren't interested in anyone volunteering in the ER (they just want somebody to stack shelves)
And no hospitals around are hiring anyone for any reason (damn economy) so there's no way to get a job as a tech.

Has anyone figured out a way around this?

Good times to apply for lab tech are after you've been certified as an EMT-B, and in the summer 👍 Just a tip I learned from a fellow EMT-B'er (although I'm not a lab tech)

Out of curiousity, why only 24 hours?

Hey, I feel ya.

I spent my entire 2 year certification trying to find a job as an EMT-b.

What I ended up doing was working doing Tissue Recovery for an Organ Procurement Agency. The turnover is usually really high, and its a way to get your foot in the door! Also a unique interesting medically relent experience for applications and interviews.

Best of luck!
