Finding DOs to shadow
Started by owleyes

I'm so glad to see someone else in the same position as I am. I'm in Boston, and it should be easy.
I also feel like I'm intruding when I ask a random stranger to show me the real deal of what goes on in their office.

Glad this came up! I'm trying to shadow a DO in the Overland Park/Kansas City area. I called several offices and got a very terse "we're busy" or "the doctor can't take any one on". If anyone knows of a receptive doctor through experience or reputation, I would really appreciate a PM or a general area of search. THANKS!
Does anyone know of a good DO (esp. family doc) that would allow me to shadow him/her in Cleveland area?
I know there exists an osteopathic medicine mentor site where DOs offer to answer questions and the opportunity to shadow. At this point, I would assume that many of them are overextended right now, but that's a place to start. I believe I googled for the site. It should not be too hard to find.
Okay just googled it.

Good place to start. I think DrKuba was hinting towards that site 🙂

I am in a postbac program right now and I would like to find someone to shadow, but it seems that that website is for current DO students, as they ask for your school name. Are there any similar resources for pre-DO students?
No problem at all. Mind you, many of them are already obligated, but it's a great place to start since they are volunteered to mentor. www.osteopathic.org also has a list of DOs in your town/state. Shooting an email or calling doesn't hurt.My mistake. When asking for school name on the search page, they were referring to the school the DO attended.
Thanks! That is a great site!👍
thanks for the info. apparently there's a shortage of DO's in southern CT 😡 there's some i can contact though
i emailed Yale-New Haven hospital to ask if there is anyone to shadow there....i'm assuming they will say no since they gave me a hard time about shadowing in the ER to begin with
i do have a question though. since i am applying relatively late, in the event that i cannot find a DO to shadow (working more than FT every week.....the ER has been the only place i could shadow, so it's really just a scheduling problem), which schools actually require a letter or shadowing time w/ a DO? i also assume that in applying and shadowing a DO, i'm not planning on asking for a LoR after just a few sessions....so it would be a little while anyway....probably as an update LoR in the spring

NSU requires a DO letter. You should go on the school's website to see their admission requirements. There is no DO shadowing time required, but shadowing a DO or an MD is advisable because it shows that you've seen medicine "in action."thanks for the info. apparently there's a shortage of DO's in southern CT 😡 there's some i can contact though

thanks, i'm applying to NYCOM, PCOM, and UNECOM, and i checked their websites. they don't require it. now i'm ready to submit 😀
i have been shadowing in the emergency department, but not one person in specific, so i couldn't get a LoR from them. i am going to look at other places outside of new haven for DO's....i believe there are some at UConn health center

For those of you who have used the mentor system, how long did it take before you heard something back?
EDIT: The answer in my case, about an hour and 45 minutes.
