I am interested in PM&R. Can anyone tell me how to job market looks in terms of finding employment as a physiatrist? Is it difficult to obtain referrals/ patients if you open a private clinic? I was envisioning having a private clinic combined with a physical therapy clinic. Can physiatrists help patients with weight loss/management?

Job market is wide open if your interests are similar. If you want a niche practice, you'll have to search more.

No one hangs a shingle and then watches patients line up for them (unless they open a pain clinic in Florida...). You gotta market yourself and make a name for yourself to be succesful. If you are the first guy in town, no one knows what you do so you have to teach them. If you are yet another physiatrist in town, you need to offer something novel or the older guys will continue gettting all the referrals.

Any doc can help people lose weight - tell them not to eat so much, exercise, give them pills, shots, etc.
