Just and FYI, your research does NOT have to be medically related. It can be anything that interests you. Med schools don't really care what you're doing research in, as long as you understand your project, can discuss it, and know what you're getting out of it. You can do research in physics, organic chemistry, psychology, whatever.
Also, as far as getting research as a freshman, it can be difficult. Some professors might offer you a "job" doing things like washing dishes, just to prove you're responsible and you'll have to work your way up to doing experiments. Other professors might be willing to train you to do experiments right away. I think you should try approaching several different professors and finding out specifically what you'd be doing in each of their labs. Also, if they turn you down, as if they'd be willing to consider you as a sophomore, or if there are any classes they'd like you to take to get a better foundation of knowledge for labwork. A lot of professors at my school took students into their lab after they had taken a class with the professor and done really well. Good luck, and don't give up!
