Finding time for gym 3rd year

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
2nd year here but I get some of my best studying done on the exercise bike. I'll make a google doc of things I've gone through and need to review, or use a flashcard program, and read off my cell phone. I don't learn new stuff well this way but it works for review.

It's possible.

Just stop by the gym on the way home from the hospital.

30 minutes of cardio is better than nothing. That is only 2% of your day. I am sure you can fit it in.

Some rotations are easier than others. I am on family med right now. I could workout 4 hours a day if I wanted.

It's rotation dependent for sure. Makes it much easier if you have a gym near your campus/housing. Although on some rotations I was running around doing things all day that I decided that would constitute my workout for the day.

I don't do cardio, I only lift. I guess I will just join a 24h fitness

Rotation dependent and you just need to be kind of flexible. When I did psych I could go to the gym every day after work. (or before if I was the type to wake up before I absolutely had to) I usually had time to swim for an an hour and do weight training. Really I could have worked out for four hours a day and still had free time for other stuff as well.

On surgery (other end of the spectrum) I stayed active most of the day (walking around the hospital, taking the stairs, utilizing the pull-up bar in the anesthesia supply room between cases) and did my more extensive stuff on my day off. I usually ran 8-10 miles on my day off and only 3-4 on a couple of other days during the week when I had the time. That and just doing some body-weight stuff (push-ups, pull-ups, core stuff) was about all I had time for. The big thing is just finding the motivation to do it when you are tired from working all day. I used it as my time to zone out and turn my brain off. That really helped get me moving when I didn't think I felt like it.

I will say that if you make time for anything make sure you make time for core strengthening. Really helps when you have to stand in the OR for long periods of time in weird positions.

if you're looking to build muscle, I do 5x5 stronglifts and it works great with my schedule. M,W, F for 1.5 hrs is all you need. For really tired days, I take a 30 minute nap at the hospital before hitting gym.
