I am currently finishing my service commitment with the navy. I have 2 years left. I've completed an accredited FM internship through the navy and would like to finish FM but do so at a civilian program with greater acuity.

My questions are:

1) Can I expect to receive credit for my entire internship? I'll have been practicing primary care as a GMO for 3 years by the time I get out, repeating any training may be a deal breaker for me.

2) What are the chances of getting signed outside of the match? If like to control where I end up. I'm considering Texas at the moment.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I am interested in this as I know of a person in a similar circumstance. He was unwilling to continue training for this same reason. Is one extra year of training such a big deal?

I think that you should expect to receive credit for your intern year. This will depend, in part, in making sure that your internship kept good records, that you kept good records, and that everything is logged correctly. But it should work out. One of the residents a year ahead of me had done an FM internship, then 5 years as a GMO. He joined our program as a PGY-2.

I think that you MUST sign outside of the match if you do not want to repeat your training. You can't apply for an FM PGY-2 through the ERAS match.

Reviving one of my old threads.

Does anyone know how I could approach a civilian program about taking me on as a pgy2? I assume I would need to find a program with an open spot from a drop correct?

You pick up the phone and call the secretary of the residency program. Explain your situation and ask if they have any PGY-2 openings. Are you DO or MD? If DO PM me and I can give you the number to my program in TX.

Agree with CB's advice above. You might try calling the SC FM programs (Spartanburg Regional, AnMed, McLeod etc). Whether they can help you depends on whether they have an open spot. Folks are generally happy here so it may be a long shot. I wish you the best!!

MD. I really appreciate the offer though.

Hopefully I can pull this off without another year of training.

It looks like there were only 5 unfilled family spots in last year's intern class.

If im unable to find a pgy2 spot would it be appropriate to inquire about a pgy1 contact outside of the match?

I feel like a strong applicant due to the fact that I already did a FM internship and have been practicing primary care independently for the past 3 years...

You should be able to get a PGY-2 spot somewhere. Since you know when you are done with the military commitment you should be able to work on it for a while and secure a spot ahead of the game. Start calling.

The timeing for all of this makes my head spin...

I am targeting a residency start date of July 2015. Are you sure it's not too early to start calling?

NO, that's only 18 months away. The program director would need to know for funding of the residency, etc. I think you would have a better piece of mind if you could secure a spot early rather than panic towards the end. I would wait until after the match happens this year (March) because the programs will know how many slots they will have available for each resident year.

Amazing advice. Thank you. I've been trying to get information on how to do this for over a year.

We had a guy in our residency in the same boat as you. He was in the military for 5 years and came back to finish. It's very common and happens all the time. You just need to get in touch with the residency co-ordinator and discuss options.
