Hey everyone!

I am a Freshman finishing up my first year at a state school. I have a 3.4 cGPA and sGPA-3.5. Both should improve after this last term.

Current EC's and planned future EC's-

Member of my schools pre-med club
will be on the pre-med club board next year, title-webmaster (recently voted in!)
10 hours shadowing clinics of a Gastroenterologist
19 hours shadowing clinics and both major/minor surgeries with Urologist (will get more hours with him before years over)
Going to Uganda this summer for 1 month of volunteering and medical experience
70 hours volunteering with red cross in high school, should this be used?

My questions are what should I do this summer after I get back from Uganda? I will have just under 3 months before I start school again.

Some options I have thought of and some possibility's are-
Volunteering at a free clinic in my neighborhood for the majority of the summer. continuing this every summer.
Volunteering at a hospital all summer.
Possibly shadowing a vascular surgeon.
Volunteering with the red cross again.
Getting a phlebotomy license.

Should I focus on 1 of these, do all of them, or just some. I will be working as well, but the hours are extremely flexible and I can work the days I choose.

Any advice or new suggestions will be very appreciated! Thanks to everyone.

Hey man, ECs lookin good so far:

Don't use the highschool red-cross hrs unless you're going to continue this in college.

As for the summer when you return, maybe you could get the phlebotomy license, while doing some volunteering in hospital/clinic (doesn't matter where)?

Looks good so far - I'd try to get some research experience in, especially if you're gunning for a higher up school.

too much pre-med ****. do some normal activities...

I am planning on doing some research in the future. Missed out on a good opportunity this summer.

I plan on volunteering out side of medicine, I just have not found something that I am really passionate about and do not want to waste my time.

Thanks for all the input.

It doesn't even have to be volunteering - medical schools will want to know more than what you actually you did, but how you grew, changed and matured through the experience. The University of Washington has some good short videos on this:

good luck, and don't stress out too much.
