Hi, I'm a pain fellow. I saw this topic hasn't been discussed in over five years, I wondered if anything had changed. The FIPP is challenging and expensive, but it then marks you as an expert in pain procedures -- although I don't know if this works in practice.

What do you fellows in practice think? Would you consider it worth it to go for FIPP certification, or is a fellowship and a good name enough?

I know I'm the $h#! at procedures. Don't need no FIPP to tell me that

FIPP is useless in my opinion, unless you are a spine surgeon doing injections trying to legitimize yourself in somebody's eyes. If you did a fellowship, you are good to go.

Yes, it is worth it to ABIPP.

I'll help you write the study guide and exam questions, for the low fee of $1K each.

I'll even start you with a free one:

A 28 year old male presents with a 32 year history of low back pain. His MRI, EMG and Xrays are all normal. He is on 320 mg Oxycontin QID, Percocet 10 mg 4 pills q4H, Soma 350 mg QID and Xanax ER 3 MG BID. He is on Medicaid. He brings in records from the 3 previous pain clinics that have discharged him for non-compliance and illegal drugs in his UDS.

Q. Who is to blame for his current condition?

A) The public school system
B) Obamacare, even though it hasn't been implemented yet
C) His PCP for not "being there" for him when he ran out of pills last month
D) Purdue Pharma
E) You, if you don't continue the meds he is on

Bonus points:
Dictate a letter to Social Security outlining why he should be granted permanent disability, despite the lack of objective findings and his lack of every having worked a job for more than 5 days, and that was for his uncle back in '02.

U da man. Now we gotta get an attorney as a partner and we are set.

I just Googled FIPP. I get it, it's supposed to be like FACS? Gimme a break!

This is like the thing where you send in money to be one of the 'Best Doctors in America".

Do you get a trophy? If you dont get a trophy dont do it. I dont want some other picece of garbage to get framed. Trophies dont need framing, the plastic gold speaks for itself.

I'm going to issue a championship belt that you can wear if you are a male and a tiara if female. In honor of our GLB breathern, you can switch those two up if you like, but that will cost you another $1K.

then every year you have to defend the belt! Pay per view?

The sad thing is that pts will actually come to the office and say, "I'm sure you've heard of him, he's the one who has THE BELT this year."

It's amazing that snake oil and these kinds of things haven't been bred out of our civilization yet. People will still believe ANYTHING!

I have thought about - don't understand the point.... Patients don't understand or care... referring doctors will give you blank stares...I doubt it provides you any degree of protection in litigation - because the judges/jurors don't care.... so what is the point?

somebody must have something positive to say about it.

Yes. Dr. Mark Boswell 🙂

Part of the reason for fipp is to provide certification for practitioners outside the US which denotes a certain level of competency.

Not all abms pain fellowships are equal and fipp does the same thing here in the US to some degree. It does seem that most of the people who will likely recognize that is other fipp physicians who are not going to refer you patients anyways...
