Newly minted MS1 here. At my school we have a 2 week course after orientation that meets daily from 8am to 5pm, and will conclude with a P/F exam. So far we've been covering things like patient satisfaction, compassion, taking history, meeting patients, LGBT issues, and lessons on the difficulties faced by the medically underserved. I was wondering if any other schools have this type of course as well?

Mine did, but it lasted one week. We went over the same type of "humanistic" stuff and ethics. I think it's a way to ease you in.

We had a LGBT session at the start of third year. The guy who taught it was pretty arrogant. My classmates messed with him and really pissed him off.

Enjoy this time. Even though the material sucks and it's easy as heck, you'll be wishing for it in a few months. 2 weeks is pretty lolzy though, I had a week.

How? By being fake homophobic?

All of those cover material required by the LCME. Every school will work those topics into their curriculum somehow, either with their own lectures or integrated into other coursework.

Enjoy the easy first couple of weeks. The other bonus is that everyone is still energetic and fresh; if you held the same course during the LAST 2 weeks of M1, I bet 10-15 people max actually show up.

Every school has that material incorporated in their curriculum somewhere. Most of those topics are spread out across MS1 and MS2, we don't have it all in one block at once.

The guy basically treated us all like homophobes even though he knew none of us, so we just played the part.
A lot of med school is teaching med students are if they're completely imbeciles. Why med schools think this, is beyond me. You'll see there's also a lot of "indoctrination" to certain ways of thinking as well.

I love this. It's still hilarious to me how the whole " homophobe " argument is used. In my experience, less than 1/10 people that disagrees with gay marriage would actually be considered homophobic. Now I support gay marriage, it's just hilarious to me that people who also do resort to such joke tactics. Same thing with the race card. Make a statement about any race other than white and you're automatically a racist. So annoying.

We have a year long course that meets every week called Practice of Medicine. It's mandatory during the first two years, and it counts as an elective during 3rd and 4th year.

My school has a 1-week introductory course that covers similar topics. No exam, just a nice way to get to know our classmates, mentors and facilitators.

Did your school have someone fall out of a vehicle one night? 🙂
