when you guys say you used first aid for psych shelf exam, does that mean:

- you used the psych section in the 1st aid for step 2, a total of 25 pages?

- you used the psych section in the 1st aid for the wards, a total of 50 pages
OR
-you used the 1st aid for psychiatry clerkship- a giant book

i bought a couple of used older books from another medical student, so I am confused as to what is being used?

thanks for the help

For the psychiatry shelf exam I mean (and probably most others) FA for the Psychiatry Clerkship, which is longer than the psych sections in the other FA books you listed but is by no means a giant book. It is also a very fast read--I went through it once at a leisurely pace the last 2 weeks of the rotation and then completely again the day before the shelf exam (we got the day off to study).

That being said, I'd say FA for the Psychiatry Clerkship is probably overkill for Step II CK (especially if you did well in the clerkship and you're using a qbank + a general review text). But I haven't taken Step II yet, so I might be wrong there.

👍
Definitely good advice. All I studied for the psych clerkship was FA for Psych and it was one of my best shelves - honored the course. Very easy read compared to most others.

That is an accurate assessment, you don't need that much detail for step 2 ck.

Although it won't help on the shelf exam, several people have told me that The Clinical Smart Book has a great Psych section to help with H&Ps/Notes/Consults/presenting to the attendings. Some have said that it was the key to their High Honors.

It is awfully sketchy when your SDN name and the author's last name are the exact same thing.....

Maybe you should disclose your association with this book.

To the OP, definitely read First Aid for Psych for the NBME.

**Edit: Nevermind....that guy's post disappeared
